Palm Beach, Fla. (March 12) -- The Assumption College baseball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the seventh and eighth innings as the Hounds defeated Bloomfield College by a 3-2 final on Wednesday afternoon in regional play. The Hounds swept the Deacons in Florida and have played five straight one-run games on the season-opening trip.
Bloomfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as leadoff batter Joe Meola scored an unearned run with two outs in the frame. Meola reached on a single, was sacrificed over to second and eventually scored on an error for the game's first run. The Deacons added to that lead in the top of the fourth with another single run as catcher David Rivera came home on a fielder's choice by Kevin Caraballo for the 2-0 edge. The Deacons had two hits in the inning, en route to six in the game.
After being set down in order in the fifth and sixth innings, the Hounds cut the lead in half in the bottom of the seventh as freshman first baseman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) came home on a sacrifice fly for the team's first run. Coggeshall reached on a one-out double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on the sacrifice fly by senior captain Michael Smith (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme).
Sophomore Anthony Perry (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) set the Deacons down in order in the eighth, his final inning of work, as he allowed six hits in his first start of the season to keep the Hounds within striking distance.
David Martinez relieved Bloomfield starter Allen Rivera in the eighth for a two-inning outing and took the mound in the bottom of the inning clinging to the 2-1 advantage. Senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) reached on a walk to open the inning and was sacrificed to second. After a Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) walk and a double steal, both Figueroa and Johnson came home on a wild pitch to take the 3-2 edge.
In the top of the ninth, freshman Nick Fennuccio (Keene, N.H./Keene) came in and pitched a scoreless inning for his first career save as the Hounds ran their winning streak to three straight. The game ended as sophomore catcher Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) threw out designated hitter Ben Thomas on an attempted steal of second after he had reached on an error by the Hounds.
Assumption improves to 3-2 overall with the win, while Bloomfield remains winless at 0-6 on the season.
