Hounds Drop Pair on 2014 Opening Day

Palm Beach, Fla. (March 8) -- On the opening day of the 2014 season, the Assumption College baseball team posted an 0-2 mark in a pair of games at the Santaluces Sports Complex on Saturday. The Hounds dropped a 5-4 final to Dominican in the opener, followed by a hard-fought 7-6 loss to LIU Post in game two as the Pioneers rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Dominican 5, Assumption 4
In the season opener, the Hounds dropped a 5-4 loss to Dominican College to fall 0-1 on the season. Six different players registered one hit in the game for the Hounds as senior Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee) eventually took the loss and is now 0-1.

Assumption jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) grounded out to second for an RBI to score senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) from third. The Chargers quickly answered though in the top of the second with a two-RBI double by Tyler Clark with no outs that scored Alex Lorenzo and Gabriel Valverde for a 2-1 lead. Dominican padded the lead with a Lorenzo run in the fourth on a fielder's choice, followed by another run in the fifth for a 4-1 advantage. In the fifth, Jayson Gray reached on a walk and stole second and third before eventually scoring on a groundout to the shortstop.

The Hounds chipped away in the bottom of the sixth with a single run as sophomore Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) scored on an error by the second baseman that allowed Clancy to reach. Dominican extended the lead back to three at 5-2 in the top of the eighth as an RBI single by Riley Strickland with no outs to score pinch runner Christopher Cockle.

Assumption mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth as junior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) and junior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) came home to cut it to a 5-4 game. Johnson scored on RBI single from freshman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) to make it 5-3, followed by a sacrifice fly from Paine to score O'Donnell.

 Rocha went five innings for the Hounds, giving up five hits for four runs with four walks and three strikeouts. Freshman Nick Fennuccio (Keene, N.H./Keene) went three innings in relief as he scattered two hits with one earned run to go along with a walk and a strikeout. Senior Bill King (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.

Peter Martinez picked up the win for the Chargers, going 6.1 innings while giving up three hits and one earned run with four strikeouts. Lorenzo was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, along with a 1-for-4 day with two RBI by Clark.

LIU Post 7, Assumption 6
Assumption built a 6-2 lead in the fifth inning over LIU Post before the Pioneers rallied in the ninth to come away with the 7-6 comeback win over the Hounds. The top three batters in the Assumption order combined for four hits and five runs in the game.

Senior Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) got the Hounds on the board in the top of the first as his two-RBI double to left field scored Johnson and Clancy. The Pioneers tied the game with single runs in both the second and third innings, including a Tom Tolan run in the bottom of the third after he reached on a double down the left field line.

Assumption answered right back in the top of the fourth as Coggeshall reached on a single to left and eventually scored on a two-out RBI single to right by Paine. The Hounds stretched the lead to 6-2 with a three-run fifth to seemingly seize control of the game. Figueroa scored an unearned run on an RBI single down the right field line by Johnson, along with a Clancy run after a bases-loaded walk. Johnson scored the final run of the inning for Assumption as he came home on an RBI groundout from senior captain Michael Smith (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme).

Single runs in the bottom of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings rallied the Pioneers, but Assumption still held a 6-5 lead entering the final half inning of play. In that inning, the first two runners reached base via singles before John Bellock got to first on an intentional walk to load the bases. LIU Post picked up the win on a two-RBI single thru the right side by Kyle Fagan to bring home Thomas Asbaty and John Susino for the 7-6 win.

Junior Zack LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) got the start for the Hounds and went 6.1 innings while scattering four hits for five runs, three earned, with three walks and one strikeout. Freshman Brad Pepitpas (Boston, Mass./Worcester Academy) took the loss for Assumption, going two innings and giving up two earned runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Brian Tinney picked up the win for Pioneers as he pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief with just one hit surrendered to go along with one walk and four strikeouts.

Johnson led the Hounds with a 3-for-4 game with two runs scored and one RBI, while three Pioneers posted two-hit games.
