North Andover, Mass. (April 26) -- The Assumption College baseball team defeated Merrimack College, 6-4, at Warrior Stadium in a non-divisional game on Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman starter Santi Palmer (San Juan, P.R./Colegio San Ignacio) picked up the victory, working 7.2 innings, scattering seven hits and four runs. Fellow freshman Zack LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) worked the final 1.1, allowing one hit and striking out one to pick up the save.
Matt Consigli (Whitinsville, Mass./Northbridge) went 3-for-4 in the game, while Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) and Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) each had two hits. Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) scored a team-high three runs.
Assumption jumped out to a five-run lead with a three-run first inning and one run in each the second and third innings, and would never relinquish the lead. The Greyhounds scored in each of the first four innings, using a single run in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead at that point.
The Greyhounds used three hits and two Merrimack errors in the first inning to score three runs, as Keddy, Smith, and Michael Filice (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay CR) came across to score.
Keddy hit a one-out double down the left field run, and scored on a Filice single in the second inning, and Sims came across to score in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Michael Smith (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme).
The Greyhounds wrapped up their scoring in the fourth as Keddy came across on an RBI single by Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's).
Assumption improves to 12-24-1 on the season and will return to play on Saturday, April 28 for doubleheader against New Haven. The first game will begin at 12:00 p.m. at Rocheleau Field in Worcester, Mass.
