Greyhounds Come Up Short in 11 Innings Against No. 21 Franklin Pierce

Worcester, Mass. (April 24) -- The Assumption College baseball team dropped a 7-5 final to No. 21 ranked Franklin Pierce University in 11 innings on Tuesday afternoon.

Joe Lopes (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) went 3-for-6 in the loss, while five different Greyhounds crossed the plate in the game.

Assumption got on the board first when junior captain Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) crossed the plate on a pitch that got away from Raven starter Joe Coto in the bottom of the first inning.

Franklin Pierce knotted the score at one on an RBI single in the top of the second inning, and took the lead on a fielders choice in the top of the third inning.

The Greyhounds tied the score at two in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken), after back-to-back walks to Michael Filice (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay CR) and Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's).

The Ravens built a two-run lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Greyhounds erased that lead with a two-run sixth inning, to tie the score at four.

Lopes led off the inning with a towering shot to left field, cutting the Raven lead to one. Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass./Boston College) walked as the second batter of the inning, and eventually came around to score on an error by the shortstop.

Each team scored runs in the seventh inning, keeping the score tied at five after seven innings. The Ravens had four base runners in the final two innings of regulation, but could not plate a run, and the game went to extras.

The Greyhounds loaded the bases in the 10th inning, but failed to push across the game winning run, setting up Franklin Pierce for a two-run 11th inning as darkness approached.

Assumption falls to 11-23-1 overall, while Franklin Pierce improves to 28-12-1 on the season. The Greyhounds will return to action on Wednesday, April 25 against Saint Rose. The game will begin begin at 3:30 p.m. at Rocheleau Field.
