Youngblood Leads Hounds Past AIC, 12-4
Worcester, Mass. -- Entering the bottom of the seventh down 4-3, the Assumption College baseball team was looking for an equalizer. They would get all the help they needed. The Greyhounds defeated the visiting Yellow Jackets of American International College, 12-4, Wednesday afternoon at Rochleau Field, scoring six runs in the seventh inning and snapping a three-game losing streak.
The Yellow Jackets took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, with freshman third baseman Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) hitting a two-RBI triple down the right field line and freshman center fielder Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) singling to left center on the very next at bat to score Clark. AIC would add another run in the top of the fourth when senior outfielder Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass./Westford) scored on a grounder, putting the Yellow Jackets up 4-0.
The Greyhounds began chipping away at the defecit in the bottom of the fourth when senior outfielder Mike Foley (Worcester, Mass./Saint John 's) scored from second on a fielder's choice. Two batters later, a bases loaded fielder's choice by junior first baseman Brendan Picini (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) would score another run, leaving the score at 4-2. In the bottom of the sixth, the Greyhounds would score again when senior outfielder Blake Youngblood (East Freetown, Mass./New Bedford) hit a pinch-hit RBI single to center field, leaving Assumption down only 4-3.
After the Greyhound pitching staff struggled early, freshman pitcher Michael Pendergast (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) entered the game in the top of the sixth and quickly shut the door on the Yellow Jackets. Pendergast was dominant, only allowing one base-runner on one hit in four innings and collecting four strikeouts.
That would set the stage for the bottom of the seventh inning. After a leadoff double by senior outfielder Wally Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass./Holy Name), AIC would walk two straight batters to load the bases, followed by a hit by pitch on Assumption senior designated hitter Drew Dombrowski (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire) brought Derosier home and tied the game at 4-4. The Greyhounds took the lead on the next batter when junior third baseman Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) walked to score another run. After a strikeout, Youngblood came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a three-RBI triple. Youngblood would later score on a wild pitch and the Greyhounds had taken a 9-4 lead.
Assumption scored three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, with Picini hitting an RBI single and Youngblood and senior shortstop Shawn Frigon (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) hitting back-to-back RBI sacrifice fly balls to give the Greyhounds a 12-4 advantage. Youngblood finished with five RBI on the day, while Picini had two. Junior catcher Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's) went three-for-four, scoring three runs.
Assumption is now 13-25 while American International falls to 14-21. The Greyhounds will look to continue their strong play as they host the University of New Haven on Thursday, April 28.
