Kevin Zifcak Named Ice Dogs Head CoachMarch 31, 2005WORCESTER, Mass. --- Kevin Zifcak, the head ice hockey coach at Worcester Academy for the past six years, has been named the 11th head ice hockey coach at Assumption College. The announcement was made by Ted Paulauskas '67, Director of Athletics. Zifcak replaces Keith Hughes '94, who retired after seven years at the helm for the Ice Dogs.
The 31-year-old Zifcak directed the Hilltoppers to a 49-44-7 varsity record while rebuilding a once-defunct program from scratch. The team competed at the junior varsity level for two seasons (1999-01) and the final four years as a Division II Prep-Private League team. This past season he coached the team to a 19-6-1 overall record---setting the school record for wins in a season---winning the Holt Conference regular-season title with a 7-0 record. The team subsequently advanced to a New England Prep Division II semifinal game. In 2003-04 the team finished 15-10 overall and was the runner-up in the Holt Conference. Previously, he served as the head coach at Bridgton, ME Academy for two years (1997-99) posting an 18-10 mark in his second season. Zifcak played his collegiate hockey for legendary coach Terry Meagher at Bowdoin College (Brunswick, ME) from 1993-97. The Polar Bears were 70-29-6 during his four-year career advancing to the E.C.A.C. Championship game three times and in 1997 to the N.C.A.A. national quarterfinals. He was also a standout player at the Holderness School (Plymouth, NH). He has also served as the Hockey Director at the Buffone Ice Arena in Worcester, MA (also the home arena for the Ice Dogs). In this position he has help design and implement programs and supervise youth leagues. One of the leading and most sought-after clinicians in the region, he has worked at the USA Hockey Select Festival, UConn Hockey Experience, Bowdoin College Clinics, and Hockey Night in Boston. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Government/Legal Studies and Environmental Science from Bowdoin in 1997. He is presently a candidate for a Masters of Science in Communications at Clark University (Worcester, MA). He still serves as a Mathematics instructor at Worcester Academy and is married to the former Sarah Abramson residing in Worcester, MA. Assumption College began its ice hockey program in 1917, playing home games on the Elm Park Pond. The College has fielded a team from 1917-19, 1956 60, and since 1964-65. The Ice Dogs have participated in 16 post-season tournaments over the last 23 years. Assumption College competes in the Northeast-10 Conference advancing to the semifinal round of the post-season playoffs this past season. The team finished at 12-12 overall advancing to the conference semifinals. |
