Greyhounds Women's Soccer Remains No. 3 in National Poll

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Assumption College senior forward ANDREA MARCOCCIO (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim) leads the Northeast-10 Conference in game winning goals and sophomore goalkeeper LAUREN MATYSIAK (Holden, MA/Wachusett) leads the conference in "zeroes."

And therefore, the Greyhounds for the second straight week are ranked third in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll. They are one of only five teams in the nation to still be unbeaten and they are ranked No. 1 in the regional poll.

Last week Marcoccio scored the game-winner---her sixth clincher of the season---as the Greyhounds won their first-ever home night game over conference rival Saint Anselm (2-1). And, then Saturday played a 110 minute scoreless draw with 23rd ranked Saint Rose on the road. Matysiak posted her seventh shutout---in 10 games---with three saves.

The Hounds have a glossy 4-0-1 record against top 25 teams . . . having beaten Bridgeport (1-0), New Haven (2-0), Franklin Pierce (3-2), Massachusetts Lowell (1-0) and tied Saint Rose (0-0). Only the UMass Lowell game was played at home. The team hosts conference rival 7-3 Merrimack College---regionally ranked No. 5 this week---Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then travels to 8-3-2 Bryant University- regionally ranked No. 7---Sunday at 1 p.m.


NORTHEAST-10 HONORS: sophomore goalie LAUREN MATYSIAK (Holden, MA/Wachusett) made six saves in a 1-0-1 week. She made three saves in a 2-1 win over Saint Anselm and followed with three more in a double-overtime on the-road scoreless tie at Saint Rose (0-0) and was the Northeast-10 Conference Goalie-of-the-Week for the FOURTH time . . . senior captain forward ANDREA MARCOCCIO (Warwick, ME/Pilgrim) scored her conference-leading sixth game winning goal against Saint Anselm AND sophomore forward ASHLEY MC MAHON (Bethel, CT/Immaculate) assisted on both goals vs. Saint Anselm to both earn mention on the weekly honor roll.

WOMEN'S SOCCER NOTES: the Greyhounds are now 4-0-1 this season against nationally ranked teams and have allowed just TWO goals . . . the team has allowed only FOUR goals all season and just ONE in the first half . . . sophomore goalkeeper LAUREN MATYSIAK (Holden, MA/Wachusett) now has played 31 games (FIFTH career), 2,728 minutes (FIFTH career), with 18 shutouts and owns an impressive 24-6-1 won-loss record FIRST tied with Heather MacIntosh (1997 2000) (24-14) . . . her career goals-against average is a glossy 0.79 (first career) . . . she is 9-0-1 with a 0.39 gaa this year . . . senior/captain forward ANDREA MARCOCCIO (Warwick, ME/Pilgrim) now has 34 goals (THIRD career), 24 assists (FOURTH career) and 92 points (THIRD career, five behind former teammate Angela Goncalves (2000-03) (34-29--97) . . . she is on target to become just the second 100-point producer in Hounds' history behind Stephanie Martin (1996-99) (46-28--120) . . .
