WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College senior men?s tennis captain JAMES NEWMAN (Johannesburg, South Africa/Damelin) and junior women's lacrosse all-America JENNY MONGEAU (Westboro, MA/Westboro) have both been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America? At-Large Team (college division) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Both are among the College's first triple majors.

Mongeau was also named the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division II Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year.

Newman was named to the second-team, while Mongeau earned third-team honors---both previously earned first-team all-district honors. Junior tennis captain elect MICHAEL GOLDMAN (Worcester, MA/Doherty) and sophomore tennis captain-elect MATT STOPP (Altoona, PA/Altoona) were both named to the second all-district team. Earlier in the year senior soccer all-America ALI REYELL (Worcester, MA/Doherty) also earned second-team all-district honors.

The Greyhounds have had 28 honorees recognized as academic all-America since 1967.

Newman earned all-Northeast-10 Conference honors four times (three times as a first-teamer), finished his regular-season conference career as both an undefeated individual singles and doubles player, while helping his team improve its conference win streak to an amazing 89 straight for Coach JOHN IPPOLITO. He was named the winner of the Rev. Armand Desautels Memorial Award as the Greyhounds' premier senior male student-athlete.

He posted an overall singles record of 51-9 (seventh best in Hounds' annals) and doubles record of 54-8 (fifth best). The Greyhounds won four regular-season and four post-season tournament titles in the Northeast-10 Conference in his career. They also advanced to the N.C.A.A. East regional tournament final---their sixth-straight N.C.A.A. appearance---and finished 18-2 overall.

He also played golf for Coach TIM BIBAUD this past fall posting a team leading 79.8 medal average for eight rounds. He fired a season-low 73 in the second round of the E.C.A.C. tournament. His 78-79--157 was 18th in the Northeast-10 Conference championship in which the Greyhounds finished third.

He was named the winner of the prestigious Robbins Scholar-Athlete Award as the premier Division II male student-athlete by the Eastern College Athletic Conference last year---the first junior to win the award---and will be a top contender to become its first-ever two-time winner. He earned CoSIDA academic third-team all-America honors in 2004.

The 24-year-old Newman is among the first triple majors in the College's 100-year history. The Accounting, Finance and Philosophy student, who earned a 3.91 grade point average, was graduated in May summa cum laude. He is studying the intense Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) curriculum on his own and has already passed the first of three brutal exams. He is also a MENSA member.

He is the son of Ron and Lois Newman of Johannesburg, South Africa. He has already accepted a position with Ernst & Young in Boston.

Junior midfielder JENNY MONGEAU (Westboro, MA/Westboro), one the Northeast-10 Conference premier scorers was named to three all-American teams as selected by members of the media and coaches organizations. She was named second-team all-American as selected by the members of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) . . . second-team as selected by laxpower.com and first-team by insidelacrosse.com. She had previously earned selection to the first all-star teams of both the Northeast-10 Conference and the IWLCA Northeast Region. She was named the female athlete-of-the-year---Andrew Laska Award---at the College for Coach DEB DRAPER.

She finished her season with 54 goals and 12 assists for 66 points and is the career scoring leader for the Greyhounds with 152 goals, 30 assists for 182 points. She is the career leader in goals and enters her senior season fourth on the assists. She has recorded at least one point in 39 of 41 career games and is the only Greyhound to have three 40-goal seasons and two 50-goal seasons.

She finished the season as the 16th leading scorer (4.13 pts/game) in the national Division II stats and sixth in goals (3.38 goals/game). She was third in goals, third in points, fourth in game-winning goals (4), fifth in ground balls (58) and third in shots (113) in the Northeast-10 Conference.

She earned National Player-of-the-Week recognition after leading the Hounds past American International (13-12) and Saint Michael's (12-11) in the final week of the regular-season. She scored five goals in each game ensuring that her team would qualify for the conference playoffs. She then scored with five seconds remaining to lift the Greyhounds past Saint Michael's (11-10) in the quarterfinals of the post season playoffs.

She has just returned from Australia after playing a round-robin tournament (June 4-16) against all-star squads representing Australia, Japan and Europe. The USA roster had 19 athletes from throughout the country.

Mongeau is also pursuing a triple major in Biology, Chemistry and Math and owns an impressive 3.8 grade point average. She is expected to pursue a career as a medical doctor or focus on medical research---at the Center for Poison Control in Atlanta, GA. She is the daughter of Peter and Patty Mongeau of Westboro.

GOLDMAN, the Northeast-10 Conference Player-of-the-Year also earned first-team honors at both singles and doubles, while posting an 11-0 No. 1 singles and 11-0 No. 1 doubles record. Goldman finished 13-2 overall in singles and 14-1 overall in doubles. He is 37-5 (28-1 conference) in singles and 45-6 (32-1 conference) in doubles in his three-year career.

He is a double major in both Economics and Marketing and carries a 3.75 grade point average. He also earned all-Northeast-10 Conference all-academic team and is the son of Daniel and Patrice Goldman of Worcester.

Matt Stopp

STOPP earned first-team honors as both a singles and doubles player for the second-straight year. He finished 15-0 overall (11-0 in the conference) primarily at No. 3 singles and 14-0, 10-0 at No. 3 doubles. He has posted an incredible 31-1 singles and 34-2 doubles mark in two years.

He is an Engineering major and carries a 3.91 grade point average. He also earned all-Northeast-10 Conference all-academic team and is the son of Ron and Anita Stopp of Altoona, PA.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
