Greyhound men's basketball falls to Mass. Lowell, 65-53, in Northeast-10 Conference action

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman guard KYLE CAIOLA (Parma, OH/Normandy) scored a game-high 19 points with five assists and his team connected on 11-of-26 three-point attempts as the University of Massachusetts Lowell defeated Assumption College, 65-53, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action SATURDAY in the Laska Gym.

The loss dropped the Greyhounds to 16-8 overall and 13-6 in the conference. They are now tied for third-place in the standings with Stonehill and Merrimack behind Bentley (16-3) and Massachusetts Lowell (15-4). The top four team draw a bye in the conference playoffs. Mass. Lowel is now 20 4 overall.

The Greyhounds had a trio of double-figure scorers including postgraduate forward GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable) (12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), sophomore center SAVOY FRAINE (Grenada Hills, CA/Grenada Hills) (12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocked shots) and senior guard MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) (11 points including three three pointers).

Sophomore forward TOBIN HAASE (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield) made one of two free throws with 3:08 remaining in the first half as the Greyhounds forged a 23-23 tie. The River Hawks scored the final five points of the half to move to a 28-23 halftime advantage as junior guard KEVIN CARR (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) (18 points, four three pointers) his a three-pointer and Caiola made a driving layin.

The River Hawks led the entire second half and extended their advantage to 16 points at 49-33 with 8:06 remainng as Carr hit a pair of free throws.

The Greyhounds then went on a 12-2 minispurt to cut the gap to 51 45 with 4:22 left.

Twomey made two free throws, Bajema buried a corner three-pointer and junior guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) made an inside move on a feed from Twomey. After the River Hawks' freshman guard MARCUS JOHNSON (South Bend, IN/Saint Joseph's) made a layup (51-40) Twomey hit two more free throws and Bajema another three-pointer to cut the gap to six points.

The Greyhounds host Franklin Pierce University WEDNESDAY in the Laska Gym at 7:30 p.m.
