Jake Longenecker of Bedford, N.H., a former all-state selection at Manchester West High School, is now a sophomore tight end on the football team at Assumption College in Worcester.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Longenecker, through three games, had caught eight passes for 116 yards and an 11.5 yards-per-catch average, which ranked third among Assumption's receivers. His 21-yard reception set up a touchdown in his team's 13-7 overtime victory over Saint Anselm College.

''Jake has the potential to be among the top people at his position in our conference," said Assumption coach Cory Bailey, whose team played last Friday night at Northeast-10 Conference opponent Bentley College. ''He is as hard a worker as we have. He has good hands and actually likes to run patterns over the middle. He also has the speed to go deep for us and he plays wide receiver at times."

As a college freshman, Longenecker caught 27 passes, including one for a touchdown, and averaged more than 13 yards per catch, but Bailey is just as enthusiastic about Longenecker's blocking ability.

''He will be a key player as we try to improve that part of our game this year," added Bailey. ''And the nice thing about Jake is that he takes the term student athlete to heart. He's an outstanding student with a 3.3 grade-point average. He's planning on a secondary teaching/coaching career and I think he'll be great working with younger kids."
