L.I.U.-C.W. POST 28, ASSUMPTION 7

Late Fourth Periods TDs Lead 24th ranked Pioneers

BROOKVILLE, NY --- Sophomore running back ANTHONY LAZARUS (South Ozone Park, NY/Christ the King) scored two second-half touchdowns and rushed for 77 yards to lead 24th-ranked C.W. Post past stubborn Assumption, 28-7, in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams here SATURDAY at rain soaked Hickox Field.

The Greyhounds dominated the first-half statistics playing to a 7-7 stalemate with the defending conference champions. Assumption held a 21:00-9:00 minute advantage in possession time and a 9-5 edge in first downs.

C.W. Post got on the board 16 seconds into the second period driving 58 yards in just four plays capped by a 49-yard scoring pass from sophomore quarterback NICK GEORGETTI (Holbrook, NY/St. John the Baptist) to sophomore wide out JAMIE KILCULLEN (Shirley, NY/William Floyd). Sophomore ANDREW KROELL (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) kicked the conversion point.

The Greyhounds tied the game with 40 seconds left in the half as senior quarterback JOE CORREIA (Melrose, MA/St. John's Prep) found junior wide out JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) pictured right in the back of the end zone for the score. Senior MIKE TOBIN (Woburn, MA/Woburn) kicked the conversion.

The nine-play, 56-yard drive started when senior linebacker MARK CINAR (Watertown, MA/Watertown) intercepted at the Hounds 41. Correia found freshman wide out DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) for 11 yards---the first collegiate reception for the fourth-leading Massachusetts high school scorer (271 points)--- and then connected with junior tight end JAKE LONGENECKER (Fernandina, FL/Manchester, NH West) twice for seven and nine yards.

Senior running back KEVIN L'ECUYER (Leominster, MA/Leominster) scampered 20 yards to set up the score. L'Ecuyer led the Hounds with 69 yards on 25 carries.

Senior cornerback JAVIEN EASON (Freeport, NY/Freeport) made the first of his two interceptions with 1:09 left in the third period. His ensuing 37-yard return set up the Pioneers at the Hounds 15. Georgetti ran around right end to the seven-- a touchdown saving tackle made by Cinar---and Lazarus scampered for five more to the two. Lazarus' two-yard off-tackle slant put the Pioneers in front to stay. Kroell's conversion made it 14-7.

C.W. Post would score two touchdowns in the final 7:57, the first capping a short drive after a fourth-and-one attempt by the Greyhounds fell short and the second coming after a second Eason interception.

Correia's quarterback sneak on a fourth-and-inches play at the Assumption 32 fell short as the Pioneers' junior defensive end MAURICE BAKER (Hempstead, NY/Kellenberg) and senior linebacker MATT ALBANESE (East Meadow, MA/Farmingdale) combined to make the game-clinching stop.

Georgetti completed three straight passes to junior wide receiver CHRIS BONE (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) for eight yards, to sophomore tight end MIKE MORAN (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) for 11 more and finally to senior wide out JO-EL KIMAIYO (Cambridge, MA/Rindge & Latin) for eight yards to the Assumption five. Lazarus capped the short drive with a two-yard slant off left tackle and Kroell kicked the conversion.

Eason then picked off his second pass of the game on the Hounds' first play of the next series. The Pioneers drove 45 yards in just five plays---a major penalty and a 14-yard pass to Bone highlighted the march capped by a Georgetti seven-yard keeper. Kroell's conversion made the final 28-7.
