Adelphi 2, Assumption 0
RINDGE, NH --- Sophomore righthander ROBERT NIXON (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) pitched a sparkling seven-hitter and struck out 13 for his third complete game as third-seeded Adelphi University defeated fifth-seeded Assumption College, 2-0, in the N.C.A.A. Division II East Regional baseball tournament here FRIDAY night at Pappas Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce University.
The Panthers defeated fourth-seeded Dowling, NY (8-1) earlier in the day, while the Greyhounds had defeated host and second-seeded Franklin Pierce (5-4) Thursday. In other action Friday, top-seeded Dominican, NY eliminated Franklin Pierce (5-4) and Dowling beat sixth-seeded Wilmington, DE (3-2).
The Greyhounds will play Wilmington, DE Saturday at 3 p.m., while Adelphi will play against the winner of that game at 10 p.m. Graduation exercises at Franklin Pierce University have moved the tournament to a 3 p.m. start.
The Panthers finally got to Assumption junior lefthander MICHAEL COLEBROOK (Leicester, MA/Saint John's) in the fifth inning. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and was in a scoreless duel with Nixon through four innings. He allowed just three hits in his 6.2 inning stint.
In the inning, junior third baseman CHRIS WEIDLEIN (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) led with a ground ball single up-the-middle and moved to third on a double to leftcenter by junior designated hitter ANTHONY ANZALONE (Smithtown, NY/Rocky Point). An infield roller by junior rightfielder JUSTIN CIAMILLO (Sayville, NY/Sayville) plated the first run and a safety squeeze bunt by senior shortstop MIKE COLONNA (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) made it 2-0.
Colebrook left with two outs in the seventh inning with a season-high nine strikeouts. Junior lefthander ANDREW QUINN (Taunton, MA/Coyle Cassidy), who fanned five in two innings Thursday against Franklin Pierce in picking up his second save, left000 the bases-loaded with a strike out of senior centerfielder ROBERT PACCIONE (Bayside, NY/St. Francis Prep).
Only junior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) had two hits against Nixon.
The Greyhounds are now 33-20-1 overall, while Adelphi is 33-14.
