Greyhounds win two of three from Bridgeport baseball

Assumption 5, Bridgeport 2

GAME ONE: Junior righthander JOE GREEN (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) combined with senior closer TIM DUPUIS (Suffield, CT/Suffield) on a two-hitter to lead the Greyhounds past Bridgeport, 5-2, in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Freshman catcher JOE LOPES (Warwick, RI/Hendricken) contriubuted a two-run double and knocked across three runs, while junior rightfielder MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) had three hits to pace an 11-hit attack.

The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Lopes sacrifice fly and then added four more runs in the third capped by the Lopes two-run double. Freshman third baseman SHANE KEDDY (Worcester, MA/Worcester Tech) knocked across a run with RBI fielders choice and senior second baseman MATTHEW JOSE (Warwick, RI/Hendricken) singled across the fourth. Bridgeport scored both its runs on an error in the fifth.

Dupuis fanned the side for pick up his third save of the trip.


At Ormond Beach, Florida

Bridgeport 8, Assumption 7

GAME TWO: Bridgeport pushed across an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning to prevail, 8-7, in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Greyhounds with the aid of a pair of long home runs scored four runs in the seventh to tie the game.

Senior centerfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) had two hits and knocked across five runs including a three-run home run in the seventh; senior designated hitter TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) had double and a seventh-inning home run and freshman third baseman NICK NAPOLI (Melrose, MA/Boston College HS) hit his first collegiate home run to pace the Hound nine-hit attack.

Junior shortstop GAETANO GUINTA (Brooklyn, NY.Bishop Ford) led the Purple Knights with a double, home run and four RBI, while sophomore centerfielder MATT RANAUDO (Milford, CT/Milford), senior first baseman KEVIN CLEMENTS (Vernon, CT/Vernon), senior leftfielder LUKE ABRAHAM (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland), and junior third baseman TYLER MOFFATT (Colonie, NY/Colonie) all had two hits in a 12-hit attack.

Guinta homered and junior rightfielder PETER BARROWS (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) added a two-run double as the Knights moved in front 2-0 in the top of the first inning. A two-run double by Abraham made it 4-0 in the third inning.

Napoli then homered in the fourth to put the Hounds on the board, 4-1, and Migrants drove across two more with a two-run double in the fifth inning. A three run double by Guinta in the sixth inning made it a four-run game in the sixth inning. Migrants and Scafidi helped bring the Hounds even 7-7 in the seventh.


At Ormond Beach, Florida

Assumption 8, Bridgeport 4

GAME THREE: senior lefthander MICHAEL COLEBROOK (Leicester, MA/Saint John's) with a spectacular four-inning relief stint from junior righthander DAVE MC LEAN (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) defeated Bridgeport, 8-4, in the final game of the Southern trip Sunday.

Senior centerfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) had three more hits and freshman catcher PETE CREAMER (Groveland, MA/Pentucket) added two more to lead the Greyhounds 11-hit attack.

The Greyhounds moved in front 3-0 in the first inning as junior rightfielder MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) and Creamer singled across runs, while senior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) plated the third with an RBI fielders choice. A two-run double by freshman thrid baseman SHANE KEDDY (Worcester, MA/Worcester Tech) made it 5-0 in the third inning.

Bridgeport struck for three runs in the fourth inning as senior leftfielder LUKE ABRAHAM (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) contributed a two-run double and junior third baseman TYLER MOFFATT (Colonie, NY/Colonie) an RBI single. A sacrifice fly by junior rightfielder PETER BARROWS (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) made it a one-run game an inning later.

Scafidi and sophomore designated hitter FRANK FLYNN (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) each had RBI singles and senior second baseman MATTHEW JOSE (Warwick, RI/Hendricken) added an RBI fielders choice in a three run seventh for the Greyhounds.

Colebrook improved his record to 3-0 this season and 17-10 overall as the second-winningiest lefthander behind recent Hall of Famer Chris Eggert (1991-94) who finished his career at 19-7. Jeff Gull (1987-90) is the Greyhound career victory leader with a 21-9 record. McLean allowed just one hit, a double by Abraham in the eighth, over his four innings of work. He struck out the side in the ninth.
