Holy Cross edges Greyhounds in women's hoop exhibition

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Senior forward
WHITNEY FREMEAU (Manchester, NH/Manchester
Central) scored 22 points on nine-for-13 floor accuracy as the
College of Holy Cross defeated Assumption College, 69-57, in an
exhibition women’s basketball game TUESDAY night at the Hart
Center.
The Greyhounds got solid performances from
junior forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin,
MA/Franklin) (17 points) and sophomore guard GABRIELLE
GIBSON (PICTURED RIGHT) (Amityville, NY/Copiague)
(13 points). Meredith made seven-of-nine attempts from the
floor.
Assumption broke from the gate quickly as a
three-pointer by senior forward/captain MOLLY
GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) and subsequent
layups by Gibson and Meredith built an early 14-10 advntage with
15:04 remaining in the half. Fremeau then hit a short jumper
in the paint and freshman guard KELLY HAMNER
(Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) scored off a feed from Fremeau from the
left baseline to tie it at 14-14.
Freshman forward JAMIE INSEL
(Clinton, NJ/Voorhees) and Griffiths both scored on a layins on
assists from freshman point SHANNON RAY (Yonkers,
NY/Ursuline, NY) to make it 18-14. Crusader freshman forward
CHRISTINE GANSER (Needham, MA/Needham) and Fremeau
hit lane jumpers to again tie the game at 18-18.
The game was last tied at 24-24 when the
Crusaders ran a 12-2 mini-spurt to make it 36-26 at the half.
As the second half unfolded Fremeau hit a pair of jumpers and
sophomore forward AMY LEPLEY (Norfolk, MA/Bishop
Feehan) scored inside as Holy Cross built its largest lead at 16
points (42-26).
The Greyhounds open their regular season
WEDNESDAY November 17 when they visit Northeast-10 Conference rival
The College of Saint Rose at 5:30 p.m. They play in the
Stonehill College Mixer, November 19-20 against Caldwell, NJ and
Dominican, NY.
