Meredith's 34 points keys Hounds past Dominican, 89-71
Assumption 89, Dominican 71
EASTON, Mass. --- Junior forward
KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) scored a
season- and career-high 34 points as Assumption College rambled
past Dominican, N.Y. College, 89-71, in their second game in the
Stonehill College Classic (women’s basketball mixer) here
SATURDAY at the Merkert Gym.
Meredith converted 12-of-18 shots from the
floor including two-of-three from beyond the three-point arc.
The game represents the third-highest scoring game for a Greyhound
women’s basketball player. Only Alumni-Athletic Hall of
Famers Stacy Mattioli (38 points against American
International, 1/12/97) and Liz Kolodziej (37
points vs. Bridgeport, 11/28/81) scored more points in a
game. Her personal previous high game was 25 points at
Bentley University (1/16/10). She was named to the
all-tournament team for her two-day performance.
Others who played well in support roles for the
Greyhounds included senior forward/captain MOLLY
GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) (PICTURED
RIGHT) (15 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three
steals), sophomore point KATIE HOWARD (Medway,
MA/Medway) (12 points, five assists) and sophomore guard
GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) (10
points). Griffiths continues her pursuit of the magical
1,000-point plateau and now has 902 career points.
The Chargers had four double-figure scorers
including sophomore guard LINDSEY LOPEZ (Elmwood
Park, NJ/Immculate Conception-Lodi) (12 points), junior guard
SAMANTHA KLUNK (York, PA/Red Lion) (11 points),
junior guard MEGHAN MURPHY (Carmel, NY/Carmel) (11
points) and junior guard KAITY LENT (Vineyard,
NJ/Sacred Heart) (10 points).
In the first half the Greyhounds moved to a
14-12 advantage as freshman forward JAMIE INSEL
(Clinton, NJ/Voorhees) converted inside on a feed from
Griffiths. At this point the Chargers then reversed the
things with a 14-2 run climaxed by a three-pointer by Klunk with
8:49 left to move to a 26-16 lead.
The Greyhounds then fought back and when Howard
drilled a straight-on three-pointer off-the-break Assumption moved
back in front 31-30. A layin with 1:20 left by sophomore
forward COURTNEY DONOVAN (Sagamore Beach,
MA/Bourne) gave the Greyhounds a 38-35 halftime advantage.
Meredith converted a lane jumper on a feed from
Insel with 13:45 left to give the Hounds a 12-point lead,
56-44.
The Greyhounds held advantage in most
statistical categories . . . just 14 turnovers to Dominican’s
21, while winning the battle of the boards (33-25) and shooting a
blistering .618 (21-for-34) in the second half.
The Greyhounds (now 2-1) are next in action
TUESDAY when they host Northeast-10 Conference rival University of
New Haven at 5:30 p.m. at the Laska Gym. Dominican (now 2-2)
is at Le Moyne College SATURDAY at 2 p.m.
