Meredith, Gibson lead first-place women's hoop past A.I.C.

    SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ---  Junior forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) scored 28 points and sophomore guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) added 20 points as Assumption College stormed from the gate to open the second half and never looked back en route to a 78-69 win in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball game WEDNESDAY night at the Butova Gymnasium. The game matched two of the five teams in the conference tied for first place with 3-0 records entering the game.
    The game start was delayed by a campus-wide power outage, scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start it did not tapoff until 6:20 p.m.
    Junior guard MICHELLE LAFOND (Holyoke, MA/Holyoke) led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points and six rebounds.
    The teams played to a 34-34 stalemate at halftime as Meredith led the Greyhounds with 15 points on six-for-eight floor accuracy.  Her inside move with 43 seconds left tied the game.
    The Greyhounds then put together a 12-0 spurt to start the second half to move to a 46-34 lead with 16:28 left.
    Meredith scored off an offensive rebound then Gibson converted an inside move and a straightaway three-pointer to make it 41-34.  A conventional three-point play by Meredith and a layin by Gibson, off a steal, made it a 12-point lead.
    Sophomore guard KATY HOWARD (Medway, MA/Medway) finished with 11 points and senior forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) ended with 10 points.  She now has 933 career points.
    Also playing well in support roles for the Yellow Jackets were RHEA PASCAL (Pickering, ONT/Notre Dame) (10 points, seven rebounds) and MARIE LI SICARD (Montreal, QUE/Dawson College) (10 points).
    Assumption is now 5-1 overall with four straight wins and 4-0 in the conference, while the Yellow Jackets are 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.  Assumption is tied with Franklin Pierce, Pace and Bentley for the top spot in the conference standings.
    The Greyhounds are next in action SATURDAY when they host conference rival Le Moyne College at 1:30 p.m.
