Baldarelli, Quick help Hounds win brawl against Saint Anselm
Worcester, Mass. -- A late 23-10 run over the final 5:47 of the game helped Assumption to overcome a late five-point deficit as the Greyhounds knocked off No. 25 ranked Saint Anselm by a 72-64 final on Tuesday night at Laska Gym.
Assumption controlled the pace from the
opening tip as the Greyhounds led 7-0 after a layup by
Tobin Haase (Southold, N.Y./Ridgewood) just 2:53
into the game. Keeping the offensive pressure on, the Greyhounds
hit three straight three-pointers to push the lead to 16-4 before
Jack Keough ended the scoring run for the Hawks.
The advantage quickly went back to double figures though and after
three straight layups midway thru the half, Assumption led 28-11
and forced Saint Anselm to call a timeout. The Hawks closed the
first period on a 13-5 run though, including a corner three-pointer
from Thomas Baudinet, to make it a 33-24 score at
the halftime break. Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village,
N.Y./Holy Cross) led Assumption with nine points, while
Baudinet led all scorers with 11 points for the half.
Saint Anselm came alive in the second half
with a 21-6 run over the first 7:15 of the period and took its
biggest lead of the game at 45-38. Cory Schmidt (Center
Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) ended the run with three
quick points and tied the game at 47-47 on a hard layup by Haase. A
pair of Haase free throws with 7:43 left gave the Greyhounds the
lead again moments later, but that was short lived as Saint Anselm
regained the advantage and made it a 54-49 score following a
reverse layup from Dino Mallios.
Assumption struck back with a decisive run
over the final 5:47 though, holding Saint Anselm to just one field
goal over the rest of the half in the win. The Greyhounds took the
lead for good on a runner in the lane from senior Mike
Baldarelli (Sutton, Mass./Holy Name) and quickly pushed it
to a five-point advantage at 61-56. The Greyhounds knocked down 10
free throws over the final minute to wrap up the eight-point
victory.
Four Greyhounds were in double figures, led
by 14 points each from Baldarelli and Ronson Quick
(Marlton, N.J./Cherokee). Baudinet led the Hawks with 22
points, along with 17 points from Allen Harris as
four Saint Anselm players finished in double figures.
With the win, Assumption improves to 10-10
overall and 7-7 in Northeast-10 play, while Saint Anselm falls to
14-4 overall and 10-4 in the league.
The Greyhounds are back in action on
Saturday, January 29th as the team travels to Manchester, N.H. to
take on Southern New Hampshire University in a 3:30 p.m.
start.
