Holy Cross stops Assumption, 77-70, in men's hoop exhibition

    WORCESTER, Mass. ---  Junior guard DEVIN BROWN (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City) scored 25 points including seven three-pointers as the College of Holy Cross defeated Assumption College, 77-70, in a men’s basketball exhibition game MONDAY night at the Hart Center.
    The Greyhounds got solid efforts from junior forward TIM BEINERT (Bellrose Village, NY/Holy Cross) (15 points, 6 rebunds), sophomore guard BOBBY HARRIS (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) (14 points, 3 steals) and sophomore forward RONSON QUICK (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) (13 points, 3 assists).
    Also contributing for the Crusaders were junior guard R.J. EVANS (Salem, CT/Norwich Free) (18 points) and junior guard MIKE CAVATAIO (Forest Hills, NY/St. Francis Prep) (10 points) who shot a combined 13-for 18 from the floor.
    The Greyhounds got off to a solid start and when junior guard KEVIN DONAHUE (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) buried a long three-pointer with 8:15 left in the half Assumption led 22-16.  The Crusaders led 32-31 at the half.
    A pair of free throws by senior forward/captain TOBIN HAASE (Southold, NY/Ridgewood, NJ) made it 49-48 Holy Cross with 13:28 remaining.  Then the Crusaders went on an 11-2 run finished by a Brown three-pointer with 8:17 left to make it 60-50.
    The Greyhounds open their regular-season SATURDAY vs. the University of Bridgeport in their mixer at 3 p.m. and play Chestnut Hill, NJ SUNDAY at 1 p.m.  Saturday’s game is the 1,900th in the history of the sport at the College.  The Greyhounds, of course, are the winningiest team in New England Division II history at 1,050-849.
