Meehan goal caps improbable comeback by Ice Dogs

    WESTFIELD, Mass. --- Sophomore left wing KEVIN MEEHAN (Melrose, MA/Austin Prep/Tilton School) (PICTURED RIGHT) scored with just 2.6 seconds left to rally Assumption College past Westfield State University, 5-4, in a non-conference men’s ice hockey game TUESDAY at the Amelia Park Rink.
    The goal capped off the seasons best comeback by the Greyhounds as junior right wing PATRICK O’KANE (Hollis, NH/Bishop Guertin/Williston-Northampton) scored the tying goal at 18:11. Meehan’s game-winner came from straight on just inside the blue line. Owl freshman goalkeeper EDDIE DAVEY (Orangeville, ONT) was screened on the play set up by sophomore forward JAIMIE VONA (West Seneca, NY/Saint Francis). Meehan and junior defenseman KEVIN GLANZMAN (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) assisted on the game-tying goal with 1:49 left in regulation on a scrum in front of the net.
    Junior center TAYLOR LARSEN (Blackstone, MA/Blackstone/Worcester Academy) opened the scoring for the Greyhounds on a feed from Vona at 8:18 of the first period. The Owls made it a 1-1 game at the first intermission as freshman forward TAYLOR MURPHY (Toronto, ONT) scored at 14:36. Sophomore forward RORY WILKOWICH (Okotoks, AB) and senior forward DREW LA COMBE (Lowell, MA) assisted on the play.
    In the second period, freshman defenseman SEAN DOHERTY (Walpole, MA/Walpole/Winchendon School) and freshman forward ROSS WHITE (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge/Winchendon School) scored within 16 seconds as the Greyhounds moved to a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore right wing JOE FIMIANI (Arlington, MA/Arlington) and senior left wing PETER BOUCHIE (Belmont, MA/Belmont/Hoosac School) assisted on both goals at 3:13 and 3:29.
    Westfield State then scored three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead. Senior center DENNIS ZAK (Dover, NJ) in the second period and then in the third period by sophomore forward LUCAS ROMERO (Rancho Santa Magarita) on a breakaway and junior forward PAT NELSON (Cary, NC) at 11:50.
    Junior goalkeeper NICK BLANCHETTE (Stuart, FL/Worcester Academy) made 30 saves for the Greyhounds, now 6-7 overall. Davey made 34 saves for the 2-9 Owls.
    The Hounds host Fitchburg State University in another non-conference match THURSDAY at 7:35 p.m. at the Buffone Rink.
