Kayla Parker leads Greyhound womens hoop past S.N.H.U., 56-50

Assumption 56, Southern New Hampshire 50

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Senior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) scored 14 points with seven rebounds and three blocked shots to lead three double-figure scorers as Assumption College defeated Southern New Hampshire University, 56-50, in Northeast-10 Conference womens basketball action Saturday at the Laska Gym.

Freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) finished with 13 points and sophomore forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) had 10 points, six rebounds for the Greyhounds now 11-9 overall and 8-7 in the conference. Freshman forward SABRINA SICILIANO (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) had seven points and a career- and season-high 12 rebounds.

Senior forward ASHARA CARRINGTON (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) scored 25 points, including 20 points in comeback effort in the second half, with 13 rebounds to lead the Penmen, now 10-12 overall and 6-9 in the conference. Senior guard JENNY MC DADE (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) finished another double-double, 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Greyhounds led 33-22 at the half coming from a one-point deficit, 17-16, with 9:40 remaining. S.N.H.U. freshman guard SLOANE SORRELL (Berwick, ME/Noble) converted an offensive rebound to give the Penmen a one-point lead (17-16) before the Hounds dominated, 17-5, over the last half of the period. Only McDade with a jumper at 4:39 and sophomore guard CHRISTINE DUFFY (South Boston, MA/Archbishop Williams), who buried a three-pointer with 36 seconds left, scored for S.N.H.U. For the Greyhounds Gibson had four hoops including a three-pointer (nine points) and Parker added six points to lead the offense.

When Carrington converted inside (and ensuing free throw) on a feed from Duffy with 5:41 left the Penmen completed their second-half comeback to take the lead 48-46. Eighteen seconds later she converted another layup as S.N.H.U. led 50-46 however they would not score again over the final 5:23.

Parker made the second of a two-shot foul opportunity and then Meredith and Parker made inside moves to put the Greyhounds back in front, 51-50, with 3:35 left. Freshman point guard KATY HOWARD (Medway, MA/Medway) (two free throws), Siciliano (one free throw) and senior guard MAEGAN COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) (two free throws) made free throws down-the-stretch to seal the victory.

The Greyhounds are next in action at the College of Saint Rose, Wednesday, at 5:30 p.m. in another Northeast-10 Conference game, while Southern New Hampshire is at Saint Anselm College the same night.
