Stonehill stops Hound women's soccer in Northeast-10 action

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Stonehill College got a solid performance from sophomore goalkeeper SARAH HICKEY (Lee, MA/Lee) and scored two first-half goals en route to an important 3-0 win over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference womens soccer action TUESDAY night at the Multi-Sport Stadium.

The Greyhounds are now 6-8-1 overall and 6-6-1 (19 points) in the conference, while Stonehill, with its fifth straight victory, moves to 9-7 overall and 7-6 (21 points) in the conference. The loss drops the Hounds to eighth place in the standings---the conference playoffs include the top eight teams-- with two games remaining against second-place Franklin Pierce (11-2-1) SATURDAY and last-place Pace (0-13) (next WEDNESDAY).

Junior forward KIRSTIE ST. MARTIN (Providence, RI/Mount Saint Charles) opened the scoring soloing in unassisted to make it 1-0 just 2:08 into the game. It was her 13th goal of the season. Then in the final minute of the half freshman back SARA NAGLE (Manchester, CT/Manchester) scored her first goal of her career on a assist from sophomore midfielder KELSEY MAHONEY (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) at 44:21 to make it 2-0 at the break.

Junior midfielder MICHELLE NORTON (Abington, MA/Cardinal Spellman) added an insurance goal, her fourth of the season, at 78:34 as Mahoney picked up her second assist of the game and ninth of the season.

Hickey finished with nine saves to post her ninth victory of the season and third shutout, The last three Stonehill wins have come via the shutout route. Greyhounds junior goalkeeper LAUREN KEATING (Nashua, NH/North) made seven saves in net.

The Greyhounds outshot Stonehill, 15-14, however, Stonehill held a slight 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
