Freshman Katy Howard leads Greyhounds women's basketball past Saint Rose, 64-58, in season opener

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman guard KATY HOWARD (Medway, MA/Medway) scored a game-high 18 points on six-for-eight floor accuracy as Assumption College defeated the College of Saint Rose, 64-58, in the Northeast-10 Conference womens basketball opener for both teams WEDNESDAY night at the Laska Gym.
The Greyhounds shot a lofty 56.6 percent from the floor, making 20-of-36 field goal attempts and six-of-10 from three-point territory. Junior forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) had 12 points, all in the second half, and freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) chipped in 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and made three-of-six from behind the arc.
Saint Rose got solid performances from senior guard ELIZABETH BUCKLEY (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) with 11 points and three three-pointers and junior forward AMY VOELKEL (Mohegan Lake, NY.Lakeland) with 10 points and five rebounds.
The first half featured seven ties and as many lead changes and Saint Rose led by five points as junior forward LIZ TROMBLEY (Merrimack, NH/Bishop Guertin) cashed a three-pointer with 2:23 left. Gibson however made it a two-point game, 28-26, at the half as she drilled a top-of-the-circle three-pointer with 37 seconds left.
Gibson started the second half with another three-pointer to put the Greyhounds in front to stay, 29-28. When Buckley hit a three-pointer for the Golden Knights with 16:05 remaining the Greyhounds lead remained one-point, 36 35.
Freshman forward SABRINA SICILIANO (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) converted a conventional three-point play off a nice feed from Griffiths and then Griffiths followed with a foul line jumper to make a six-point game, 41-35, with 13:31 left. The teams basically traded baskets until Howard converted another conventional three-point play with 1:51 left to make it 61-54.
The Greyhounds host the Marriott Courtyard Mixer FRIDAY and SATURDAY at the Laska Gym. They host Felician, NJ at 7:30 p.m. Friday while Stonehill clashes with Concordia, NY at 5:30 p.m.
Saturday the teams switch off as Stonehill plays Felician at 1:30 p.m. and the Greyhounds play Concordia at 3:30 p.m.
