Stonehill stops Hound women despite Gibson's 21 points

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Junior point guard EMILY ROUSSEAU (Biddefordd, ME/Biddeford) scored 18 points to lead four double-figure scorers as Stonehill College defeated Assumption College, 81-68, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action Tuesday at the Laska Gym.
The Greyhounds, losing for the first time in eight games at home, were paced by freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) with a game-high 21 points. Senior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) (16 points) and freshman point guard KATY HOWARD (Medway, MA/Medway) (13 points, five assists) played well in support roles for the Greyhounds. Assumption is now 9-6 overall and 6-4 in conference action.
Senior forward KELSEY SIMONDS (Middleboro, MA/Cardinal Spellman) (16 points, eight rebounds), senior guard MEGAN METHVEN (Corning, NY/Corning East) (16 points) and junior guard KRISTEN MC WHIRTER (Melvin Village, NH/New Hampton Prep) (11 points, seven assists) all reached double-figures for the Skyhawks, now 13-4 overall and 8-2 in the conference.
Stonehill led at the half (36-34), but the Hounds scored the first three points of the second half to take its first lead (37-36) after a layup and free throw from Gibson on back-to-back possessions. The Skyhawks then ran a quick 12-0 run to regain the lead and push it into double-figures for the first time (50-39) after a McWhirter three-pointer. Gibson broke the spell with a pair of free throws with 14:37 left.
The Greyhounds are next in action when they travel to conference rival Bentley University Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Stonehill hosts New Haven, also in a conference matchup, at 1:30 p.m.
