NEW HAVEN, Conn. --- Senior forward JACQUELINE JOHANNES (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) turned in a double-double 23-point, 12-rebound performance as Southern Connecticut State University defeated Assumption College, 67-60, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action last night at the Moore Field House. It was the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Greyhounds open play in the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs hosting Southern New Hampshire University Sunday at the Laska Gym at 1 p.m. Tickets for the game are priced at $7 for adults, $4 for children/seniors and $1 for students (with ID) and are available at the door.
Southern Connecticut broke from the gate quickly and led 30-20 at the halftime break as Johannes led the way with 11 points and five rebounds. Senior guard ALLYSON SMITH (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) chipped in with nine points. Junior forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) continued her hot scoring touch with 10 points for the Greyhounds. Assumption shot just .308 from the floor (8-for-26) in the period and finished with a subpar .351 (20-for-57) floor accuracy including an 0-for-7 effort from three-point territory.
Meredith led the Greyhounds overall with a double-double performance 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) scored all 18 of her points in the second half, while senior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) chipped in with 14 points. Smith with 14 points and junior guard LOGAN LENTZ (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) with 10 points played well in support roles for the Owls.
The Greyhounds are now 15-12 overall and finished 12-10 in the conference, while Southern Connecticut is 13-14 overall and 10-12 in the conference.
