New Haven women's basketball stops Greyhounds, 65-58, in overtime thriller

WEST HAVEN, Conn. --- Freshman center JILL BARANGER (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) scored 18 points to lead three double-figure scorers as the University of New Haven defeated Assumption College, 65-58, in a Northeast-10 Conference womens basketball game TUESDAY night at the Chargers Gym.
Junior guard DOMINIQUE STELLMACHER (New Britain, CT/New Britain) (14 points) and junior guard NICOLE POLLARD (Swansea, MA/Joseph Case) (12 points) each played well in support roles for the Chargers who outscored the Greyhounds 8-2 in the overtime period.
Junior forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) led the Greyhounds with a double-double 20 points and 11 rebounds, while senior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) (12 points) and freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) (12 points) also reached double-figures.
New Haven led 35-24 at the half scoring 20 points as the result of 18 turnovers by the Greyhounds.
Griffiths gave the Greyhounds their only lead of the half, 2-0, on a layup off a feed from Parker. The Chargers then ran the next 13 points to move to a 13-2 advantage. Baranger was the major offensive weapon with nine points in the run.
Down nine, 40-31, in the second half the Greyhounds rallied to move ahead 47-46 outscoring the home Chargers, 16-6. Griffiths drilled a top-of the-circle jumper to give the Hounds a one-point lead with 8:03 left.
New Haven however came back to go ahead 55-51 as Stellmacher converted a conventional three-point play with 1:41 left. Parker then hit on a nice sspin move inside and Gibson made a baseline three-pointer to give the Hounds the advantage, 56-55, with 1:06 left. New Haven tied the game as senior forward ALYSIA SAUNDERS (Bronx, NY/Aquinas) made one of two free thows withe 36 seconds left.
Griffiths started the overtime making a pair of free throws to take a two point lead (58-56) however the Chaargers would run the last nine points to win by seven.
The Greyhounds now 3-1 overall and 1-1 inthe conference host conference rival Adelphi University SUNDAY at 1:30 p.m. New Haven is now 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
