Gibson, Howard and Parker lead Hounds past Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, NY --- Freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) scored 15 points including the go-ahead basket with 53 seconds remaining as Assumption College defeated Le Moyne College, 68-63, in Northeast-10 Conference womens basketball action SATURDAY at the Ted Grant Court.
The Greyhounds, now 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference, scored the final six points of the game after Dolphin sophomore forward BRANDY WANGELIN (Olean, NY/Olean) put Le Moyne in front, 63-62, with an inside move with 1:12 left.
After Gibson reclaimed the lead for the Greyhounds freshman point guard KATY HOWARD (Medway, MA/Medway) and then Gibson made two-of-two free throws down-the-stretch to salt it away.
Howard finished with a game-high 17 points, while senior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) added 15 points and four blocked shots. Parker now has scored 996 career points in her career and will undoubtedly move into the magic 1,000-point plateau Tuesday when the Greyhounds host conference rival Southern Connecticut State at the Laska Gym (5:30 p.m.).
Senior forward COURTNEY CORYEA (Mooers Forks, NY/Northeast Clinton) led the Dolphins with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while senior guard MUFFY SADLER (Cedar Rapids, IA/Kennedy) (14 points), senior guard SIOBHAN SHIELDS (Mashon, NH/St. Bernard's) and senior guard MEGAN MURPHY (Clinton Corners, NY/Millbrook) (11 points) all reached double figures.
The Dolphins led 35-33 at the half as Murphy and Sadler each had nine points to lead the attack. Howard had 11 points in the first 20-minutes including three three-pointers.
With Le Moyne leading 24-19 after a three-point by Sadler, the Greyhounds then ran off a 14-2 streak to assume momentary control 33-26 after a layin by sophomore forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) on a feed from Gibson. Le Moyne then scored the final nine points of the half to move in front by two on a three-pointer by Murphy with 1:09 left.
In the second half the Greyhounds finally took the lead, 44-43, as Meredith made both ends of a two-shot foul with 12:17 left. They moved the advantage to a game-high nine points.
