WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) scored 13 points and senior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) added 10 points as Assumption College defeated Concordia, NY, 79-63, in the second-round of the Assumption College Courtyard Classic SATURDAY at the Laska Gym.
In the first game, senior forward KELSEY SIMONDS (Middleboro, MA/Cardinal Spellman) scored 24 points with four blocked shots and junior guard KRISTEN MC WHIRTER (Melvin Village, NH/New Hampton Prep) added 20 points including four three-pointers as Stonehill College (4-2) defeated Felician, NJ, now 0-2, 69-52.
Parker and Gibson both earned all-tournament honors for the Greyhounds, while Simonds and McWhirter were Stonehill representatives. Felician senior guard JANELLE BIAMONTE (Secaucus, NJ/Marist) and Concordia senior forward DANA ROMMEL (Staten Island, NY/Saint Joseph-by-the-Sea) also made the team.
The Greyhounds, now 3-0 on the young season, used a 13-0 run in the first half to take command. Rommel brought the Clippers to two-points at 9-7 and then in order junior forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) hit a top-of-the-circle three-pointer, freshman forward COURTNEY DONOVAN (Sagamore Beach, MA/Bourne) (8 points, 4 rebounds) converted a turnaround in the paint, freshman guard KATY HOWARD (Medway, MA/Medway) (7 points, 4 assists) hit a lane jumper, Gibson knocked down a three-pointer on the wing and senior guard JACKIE BRANCA (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson) (7 points, 5 assists) followed with another three pointer to make it 22-7.
A layin by freshman forward SABRINA SICILIANO (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) (8 points, 9 rebounds) with 4:30 left in the half gave the Hounds their largest lead, 22 points, at 40-18. The Hounds led at the half, 45-28, and outscored the Clippers, 20-6, in the paint.
Junior guard SHELLEY MONAHAN (Exeter, RI/Exeter-West Greenwich) led the Clippers, now 0-2, with 16 points, while Rommel finished with a double-double 15 points, 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard KAYLA KOCH (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) added 10 points, four assists.
The Greyhounds, now 3-0 overall, are next in action TUESDAY when they travel to Northeast-10 Conference rival New Haven for a 5:30 p.m. tapoff.
