Meredith, Griffiths lead Hound women past Bloomfield, 56-45

PLEASANTVILLE, NY --- Junior forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) scored 16 points (9 rebounds) and sophomore forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) added 15 points (9 rebounds) as Assumption College defeated Bloomfield, NJ College, 56-45, in the second round of the Pace University Mixer here TUESDAY at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
The Greyhound defense was also a major factor as it limited Bloomfield to a .270 accuracy from the floor as the Deacons made just 17-of-63 attempts.
Meredith and senior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) all earned positions on the all-tournament team.
The Greyhounds moved a 26-22 halftime lead. Bloomfield junior guard ROBYN BURTON (Capitol Heights, MD/Oxon Hill) hit a jumper in the paint to make it 2-1 and then the Greyhounds ran off 10 straight to move to an 11-2 advantage.
Meredith had three free throws and Griffiths one before Parker converted on an inside move and subsequent free throw. Meredith finished the run with a conventional three-point play to make it a nine-point lead.
Senior forward EMILY HORROCKS (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) buried a three-pointer with 21 seconds remaining in the half to cut the gap to four at the break.
The Deacons junior center TIFFANY MC DANIEL (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) socred inside off a feed from junior forward NICOLE HAWKINS (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan) to make it 35-31 Hounds with 10:24 left.
The Greyhounds then scored the next eight points . . . a three-pointer by Griffiths, a free throw by freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague), two free throws by Griffiths and a jumper by Griffiths to make it 32-31 with 7:21 remaining.
They would get the lead as high as 17 points as Meredith connected on a layin from Gibson to make it 50-33 with 4:06 left.
Burton led the Deacons with 13 points and four steals, while McDaniel and freshman center JAMILA GARRETT (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor) were the top rebounders with nine each.
The Greyhounds are now 8-3 overall and return to Pleasantville, NY January 2 for a Northeast-10 Conference game with Pace University. Bloomfield is now 2-7 overall.
