Gibson leads women's hoop comeback win over A.I.C.

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) scored 19 points with five three-pointers as Assumption College rallied from a seven-point deficit to defeat American International College, 67-73, in Northeast-10 Conference womens basketball action WEDNESDAY night at the Laska Gym.

The Greyhounds also got solid performances from senior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) with 12 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots and freshman point guard KATY HOWARD (Medway, MA/Medway), who finished with six points on a pair of three-pointers, three steals and a season-high 11 assists. Parker now has 981 points as she nears the magic 1,000-point plateau for her career.

American International got a solid performance from senior forward LAECHIA CONLEY (Urbanville, IA/Hoover) with 26 points and six rebounds.

The Greyhounds defense proved decisive in this one as they held the Yellow Jackets to a .352 floor accuracy (25-for-71) and just one-of-22 from three-point territory. They also recorded nine blocked shots.

Assumption, now 5-1 overall is now 3-1 in the conference, game behind leageu-leader New Haven (4-0). American International is now 1-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Two free throws by senior guard KRISTIN BOESENBERG (Pocono Pines, PA/Pocono Mountain West) put the Yellow Jackets in front, 63-56, with 3:47 left before the Greyhounds ran the last 11 points of the game to win it.

Junior forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) started the run with a wing jumper and a conventional three-point play by sophomore forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) on a feed from Parker made it a two-point game (61-63) with 1:25 remaining.

Howard put the Hounds in front with a top-of-the-circle three-pointer (also assisted by Parker) with 50 seconds left. Parker then made two free throws and Meredith one-of-two down-the-stretch to seal it.

The Greyhounds are next in action at conference rival Le Moyne College SATURDAY at 1:30 p.m. American International is at Adelphi, also on Saturday.
