Greyhounds third in Worcester Volleyball Championship

WPI 3, Assumption 1
Freshman outside hitter BAILEY SARBER (Westerly, RI/Westerly) had 16 kills to lead the offensive attack as WPI defeated Assumption College, 3-1, in the first-round of the Worcester City Tournament hosted at the Kneller Center of Clark University.
WPI owned a hitting percentage of .217 in dominating the match. The Greyhounds won the second game of the match 26-24 however WPI prevailed 25-20, 25-20 and 25-15.
Freshman setter MARIA RANGEL (Weston, FL/Sagemont) had 34 assists for WPI and senior outside hitter BECCA HOLMBERG (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) finished with a match-high 16 digs.
Leading the Greyhounds were senior outside hitter JESSICA HALLER (Meriden, CT/Maloney) and junior middle hitter AIMEE DRAINVILLE (Rockville, RI/Chariho), each with 11 kills, while senior setter KELLY BLUMENAUER (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) ended with 31 set asists. Haller and freshman libero STEPH WHOOTEN (Norton, MA/Bishop Feehan) finished with 14 digs.
Assumption 3, Worcester State 0
Sophomore middle hitter SAM LUPINSKI (Waltham, MA/Waltham) and junior middle hitter AIMEE DRAINVILLE (Rockville, RI/Chariho) each had 11 kill and the Greyhounds owned a hitting percentage of .228 en route to a 3-0 win over Worcester State College to take third-place in the Worcester City Tournament hosted at the Kneller Center of Clark University.
Senior setter KELLY BLUMENAUER (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) led with 31 set assists, while junior right side SAMANTHA WESSLING (Millis, MA/Millis) (11) and freshman libero STEPH WHOOTEN (Norton, MA/Bishop Feehan) (10) led the team in digs.
Sophomore setter BRITTANY STODDARD (Orange, MA/Maher) with 12 set assists and senior outside hitter LAUREN SAYLOR (Swansea, MA/Swansea) with 11 digs were standouts for the Lancers.
The Greyhounds won by game scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-18.
Lupinski was named to the all-tournament team.
Assumption College, now 1-4 overall, is in action SUNDAY in the Saint Anselm College Mixer when they play non-conference matches against Saint Michael's College at 2 p.m. and against host Saint Anselm College at 4 p.m.
