Merrimack prevails over Greyhounds volleyball in season opener, 3-0

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. --- Junior middle blocker MEGAN MURRAY (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Trabuco Hills) had 12 kills to lead Merrimack College past Assumption College, 3-0, TUESDAY night in the non-conference opener for the Greyhounds at the Volpe Athletic Center.

The Warriors also had 14 service aces in the three-game match including four each from Murray and junior defensive specialist ALYSSA PICKERT (Tinley Park, IL/Lincoln-Way East).

Senior captain/outside hitter COURTNEY STRATTON (Hudson, NH/Alvirne) led the Greyhounds with 10 kills, while senior setter KELLY BLUMENAUER (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) finished with 13 set assists and freshman libero STEPH WOOTEN (Norton, MA/Bishop Feehan) had 12 digs.

The Greyhounds took the early 5-4 lead in the first, but the Warriors rattled off 20 of the next 25 points to quickly turn around the game and prevail 25-11. Merrimack won the next two games, 25-9 and 25-15.

The Greyhounds host the Assumption College Labor Day Mixer SATURDAY. Franklin Pierce and Assumption play at 12 noon, Franklin Pierce and Stonehill at 2 p.m. and finally Assumption and Stonehill square off at 4 p.m. Merrimack, now 1-1, are the Bridgeport Tournament Friday and Saturday.
