Greyhounds softball splits with Stonehill in NE-10 action

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore righthanders CASEY HALAJIAN (Quincy, MA/Archbishop Williams) and CASEY DURSO (Salem NH/Lawrence Academy) combined to scatter eight hits and strike out eight to lead Assumption College past Stonehill College, 6 2, in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader here Sunday at Marois Field.
In the opener, Stonehill sophomore righthander SAMANTHA KRANTZ (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) pitched a three-hitter and struck out six to lead the Skyhawks past the Greyhounds, 3-1.
GAME ONE: the Skyhawks scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore shortstop CHELSEA STRYKER (Baldwin, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) singled across the first run, a suicide squeeze by freshman KELSEY WILCOX (Canterbury, CT/Griswold) scored the second and error made it a three-run inning.
An infielder roller by senior catcher ERIN MURPHY (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) scored the Greyhounds run in the sixth inning.
GAME TWO: Halajian improved her record to 2-0 this week with 5.1 innings allowing four hits and fanning seven, while Durso notched her third save of the season with a scoreless 1.2 innings.
The Greyhounds opened the scoring as senior righfielder KARA LYONS (Dracut, MA/Dracut) had an RBI single in the fourth inning and then they scored four more runs in the fifth inning . . . freshman second baseman LAUREN MEDEIROS (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) singled in the first run, junior third baseman ASHLEY BILODEAU (Manchester, CT/East Catholic) doubled in a run and junior first baseman AMY GORDON (Seekonk, MA/Bishop Feehan) capped the inning with a two-run single to rightfield.
Bilodeau had three hits for the Greyhounds, while Lyons, Gordon, Medeiros and freshman shortstop BRENNA MORRISSEY (Salem, NH/Lawrence Academy) had two hits each in a 12-hit attack.
RBI singles by junior second baseman KATY ABARR (Richmond, RI/The Prout School) and freshman rightfielder CASEY REMICK (Norton, MA/Norton). who had three hits in the game, put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard in the sixth inning and cut the gap to 5-2. Medeiros doubled home another insurance run for the Greyhounds in their half of the sixth inning.
Assumption is now 10-12 overall and 4-6 in the conference, while Stonehill moves to 12-10-1 overall and 7-5 in the conference.
The Greyhounds are at Pace University Tuesday in another Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
