Medeiros leads Greyhound softball in sweep of Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. --- Sophomore righthander JENNIFER LOWREY (Assonet, MA/Apponequet) with late relief help from sophomore righthander CHELSEA DURSO (Salem, NH/Salem) pitched Assumption College past Merrimack College, 6-3, in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader here Tuesday.

In the second game freshman second baseman LAUREN MEDEIROS (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) had three hits including a double, three RBI and her fifth home run of the season to lead the Greyhounds to an 8-2 win. She is now hitting .448 with five homers and 37 rbi.

The Greyhounds have now posted a 9-3 record over their last 12 games and are 16-14 overall and 10-8 in the conference (fifth place). Merrimack is now 11-20 overall and 7-11 in the conference.

GAME ONE: freshman shortstop BRENNA MORRISSEY (Salem, NH/Lawrence Academy), junior third baseman ASHLEY BILODEAU (Manchester, CT/East Catholic) and Medeiros each had two hits to lead the Hounds 10-hit attack.

Bilodeau started the scoring an RBI double in the third inning scoring Medeiros who had just stroked her 17th double of the season. The Hounds scored five runs in the fifth with junior leftfielder BERNADETTE FUENTES (Hicksville, NY/Holy Trinity) hitting her first home run of the season to get things going. Senior centerfielder MEGHAN DI VITTO (Milford, MA/Milford) and Medeiros had RBI doubles, while Morrissey and Bilodeau had RBI singles to complete the inning.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder ALEX GALLANT (Salem, NH/Salem) keyed a three-run mini-surge in the seventh with a two-run home run but Durso registered her fourth save to preserve the win.

GAME TWO: Medeiros put the finishing touches on a five for-six performance with three hits, while Morrissey, Fuentes, and junior first baseman AMY GORDON (Seekonk, MA/Bishop Feehan) each had two hits in the Hounds nine-hit attack.

Sophomore righthander CASEY HALAJIAN (Quincy, MA/Archbishop Williams) improved her record to 5-0 with the win, while Durso got her fifth save with 2.2 innigns of one-hit, three strike out relief.

Medeiros hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Greyhounds, while senior third baseman CASEY CONETTA (Darien, CT/Darien) had an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Fuentes had a RBI single, Medeiros an RBI double and DiVitto a sacrifice fly as the Hounds moved in front 5-1 in he second inning. Sophomore second baseman MONIQUE GOSSELIN (Lawrence, MA/Central Catholic) made it 5-2 with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the second.

Medeiros singled across another run in the fourth, while Gordon (RBI single) and Bilodeau (sacrifice fly) accounted for two more in the seventh to account for the final.
