UMass Lowell scores two goals in second half to come-from-behind and beat Greyhound men's soccer, 2-1, in Northeast-10 action

Massachusetts Lowell 2, Assumption 1

LOWELL, Mass. --- The University of Massachusetts Lowell scored two goals early in the second half to come-from-behind and defeat Assumption College, 2-1, in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action here SATURDAY.

The Greyhounds, now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference, saw their five-game win streak come to and end and also fall out first place. Massachusetts Lowell moves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Senior forward JEFFERY DANSO (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) and junior forward STEPHEN POTCHER (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington) scored 12 minutes apart to overcome the Greyhounds, 1-0, halftime advantage.

Assumption opened the scoring in the first half as conference-leading scorer and junior forward STEVE BLAISDELL (Peabody, MA/Bishop Fenwick) headed home a corner kick for his seventh goal of the season from junior midfielder JEFFREY SWAN (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) at 19:33.

Danso scored his second goal of the season on a feed from senior midfielder GUILLERMO CISNEROS (Methuen, MA/Methuen) at 48:36 and Potcner scored the eventual game-winner, his fourth goal of the season, at 56:00. Senior midfielder JHONY VALENCIA (Lowell, MA/Lowell) took the original shot and Potcner tucked the rebound into the far corner.

Senior goalkeeper RYAN RICHARDS (Holden, MA/Wachusett) made three save in the game including two brilliant stops in the waning minutes to preserve the win. Greyhound junior goalkeeper BRANDON SULLIVAN (Halesite, NY/Saint Dominic's) made four saves.

Senior defender DOUG STARBIRD (Dunstable, MA/Groton-Dunstable) took advantage of a mistake at the top of the box only to be stymied by Richards at the 74 minute mark and Blaisdell was stopped on a header off a Swan throw in five minutes later.

The teams each had 13 shots however the River Hawks had a decided 10-4 edge in the second half. The Greyhounds had all five corner kicks in the game.

The Greyhounds are next in action TUESDAY when they host Queens, NY College in a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m. in the Multi-Sport Stadium. Mass. Lowell is next in action WEDNESDAY when they host Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m. in a key conference match.
