Dom Mondi OT goal lifts men's soccer past Southern Connecticut, 4-3, and into first-place in the Northeast-10

NEW HAVEN, Conn. --- Freshman forward DOM MONDI (Peabody, MA/Peabody) scored his Northeast-10 Conference leading third game-winning goal of the season with 28 seconds left in the second overtime as Assumption College defeated Southern Connecticut State University, 4-3, in double overtime here WEDNESDAY night.

The win, a team-record fifth straight, moved the Greyhounds, now 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference, into first place in the Northeast-10 Conference. Southern New Hampshire which shared the lead entering the evening played a scoreless tie with conference rival Stonehill College. Southern Connecticut, now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference, had a five game win streak snapped.

The Greyhounds had a territorial advantage, outshooting the Owls, 15 8 overall (7-5 in overtime) and owning a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Junior forward STEVE BLAISDELL (Peabody, MA/Bishop Fenwick), who entered the game as the conference's top scorer finished with a goal and two assists, while Mondi added two goals. Blaisdell now has six goals, two assists for 14 points.

Blaisdell opened the scoring for the Greyhounds at 4:05 scoring on a brilliant solo effort (his sixth goal of the season) before freshman forward TOM CARROLL (Belford, NJ/Middletown North) made it 2-0 at 17:30. The play which finished off a corner kick came on a feed from Blaisdell.

Southern Connecticut got on the scoreboard at 29:20 as freshman midfielder YONI FELDMAN (Ramat-Gan, Israel/Blich Ramal-Gat) scored his second goal of the season unassisted on a chip over the goalkeeper from the left side.

Mondi put the Greyhounds back up by two goals as he took a pass from Blaisdell and blasted a shot to the left corner at 36:53. Sophomore CEDRIC PANZU (Mons-En-Baroeul, France) scored his first goal of the season on a feed from junior midfielder VICTOR HERNANDEZ (Rye Brook, NY/Portchester) to make it 3-2 at the half.

The Owls would tie the game at 3-3 at 58:02 as freshman defender YATES MURPHY (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) on an assist from Hernandez scored off a corner kick header.

Mondi ended it at 109:32 with his fourth goal of the season.

Junior goalkeeper BRANDON SULLIVAN(Halesite, NY/St. Dominic's) made two saves for the Greyhounds, while junior CHRIS RYBACKI (Putnam, CT/Putnam) made three saves for the Owls.

Assumption is next in action at conference rival Massachusetts Lowell SATURDAY at 1 p.m. Southern Connecticut hosts Saint Michael's SATURDAY at 4 p.m.
