Kevin Donahue leads Greyhounds past Philadelphia, 74-68

PHILADELPHIA, PA --- Sophomore guard KEVIN DONAHUE (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) scored 16 points to lead five double-figure scorers as Assumption College defeated Philadelphia, 74-68, in the first round of the East Region Classic hosted by Holy Family University.

Junior forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) had a double-double 14 points, 12 rebounds, senior guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Fort Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) (13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) in 40 minutes of action, junior forward TOBIN HAASE (Southold, NY/Ridgewood, NJ) (12 points, 7 rebounds) and freshman forward RONSON QUICK (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) (12 points, 7 rebounds) all played well in support roles for the Hounds.

Senior forward MALCOLM INGRAM (Philadelphia, PA/Solebury Prep) led all scorers with 28 points.

The Greyhounds who never trailed in the contest outrebounded the Rams, 52 29 and earning 14 second-chance points in the process. They moved to a quick 9-2 lead as senior center SAVOY FRAINE (Grenada Hills, CA/Grenada Hills) hit a jumper in the paint, Donahue followed with another jumper in the paint, Quick made a move inside and subseuent free throw for a conventional three-point play and Bluford hit a third lane jumper to make a seven-point advantage.

The Hounds would lead by as much as 12 points, 24-12, in the first half as Donahue drilled a three-pointer with 6:15 remaining. They led 36-33 at the break.

In the second half the Greyhounds spurted again to make it an 11-point advantage (46-35) with a quick 10-2 run. Baldarelli hit a jumper off a feed from Bluford and Bluford hit a pair of free throws before Rams senior forward MIKE YOCUM (Dresher, PA/Episcopal Academy) hit a jumper.

Quick followed with an inside move, Baldarelli had a tip-in and Donahue drilled a wing jumper to make it 46-35.

The Rams however did not go away as a layup by freshman guard ED DI RUGERIS (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Pennsbury) made it a one-point game, 65 64, with 3:02 remaining. Donahue hit a jumper and Haase made two free throws to get it back to five points (69-64) with 2:07 left.

Donahue made four straight free throws in the final seconds to salt it away.

The Greyhounds, now 6-3, play host Holy Family at 3:30 p.m. in the second day of the tournament. Philadelphia is now 9-5 and plays Stonehill College at 1:30 p.m.
