Savoy Fraine leads Greyhounds men's basketball past New Haven; Serge DeBari notches win No. 350

WEST HAVEN, Conn. --- Senior center SAVOY FRAINE (Grenada Hills, CA/Granada Hills) was a one-man show with a career-high 34 points as Assumption College defeated the University of New Haven, 90-77, in Northeast-10 Conference mens basketball TUESDAY night at the Chargers Gym.

Fraine converted 12-of-16 shots from the floor including a career-best six-of-seven from three-point territory and added seven rebounds.

The victory improved the Greyhounds record to 3-0 on the season (2-0 in the conference) and was No. 350 in the storied career of veteran head coach SERGE DE BARI '71 . DeBari's record now stands at 350-264 in his 25th season as a head coach at both Babson College and Assumption College. His record at Assumption College, now in his ninth season is 126-113.

Senior guard/captain COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/Saint Vincent) (13 points including nine-of-10 from the free throw line), junior forward/captain MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) (11 points, seven rebounds, three three-pointers) and sophomore forward TIM BIENERT (Floral Park, NY/Holy Cross) (10 points, five rebounds) played well in support roles for the Greyhounds.

Senior forward CASSIUS CHANEY (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame of Fitchburg, MA) led the Chargers with a double-double 27 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard DARRYL GREENE (Clinton, MD/Bishop McNamara) added 13 points, six assists.

Fraine scored 15 point in the first half as the Greyhounds moved to a 36-31 advantage. A free throw by freshman guard BOBBY HARRIS (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) made 36-23 with 2:22 left before the Chargers ran the last eight points to make it a five-point game.

In the second half the Chargers continued their comeback and took the lead, 45-43, on a three-pointer by freshman guard MIKE STYS (Hooksett, NH/Manchester Central) with 15:32 left in the game.

With the Chargers leading 55-54 after a layin by freshman SEAN HARRIS (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon) the Greyhounds then went on an 11-0 run to put it away.

Bienert made a move inside to put the Hounds in front to stay and then sophomore guard KEVIN DONAHUE (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) drilled a top-of-the-circle three-pointer, Beinert hit another layup and Bluford nailed both ends of a one-and-one opportunity. Donahue finished the run with a lane jumper at 7:07.

The Hounds built it to as mich as 15 points, 79-64, after Fraine his sixth three-pointer and followed with a conventional two-point jumper in the lane and then another corner three-pointer. The run was finished as freshman forward RONSON QUICK (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) converted an offensive rebounds.

The Hounds are off until SUNDAY when they host conference rival Adelphi University at 3:30 p.m. in the Laska Gym.
