NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. --- Junior guard DARIN MENCY (Hagerstown, MD/St. John's Catholic Prep) scored 32 points to lead Merrimack College past Assumption College, 88-78, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball here Saturday at the Volpe Center. Mency made six three-point shots in 10 attempts, while backcourt mate, senior DARREN DUNCAN (Briarwood, NY/Christ the King) added 20 points on nine-for-11 floor accuracy with nine assists and three streals.
Senior center SAVOY FRAINE (Grenada Hills, CA/Grenada Hills) led the Greyhounds, now 7-6 overall and 4-5 in conference play, with 19 points and six rebounds. Freshman forward RONSON QUICK (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) (13 points, seven rebounds), sophomore forward TIM BEINERT (Floral Park, NY/Holy Cross) (12 points, four assists), sophomore guard KEVIN DONAHUE (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) (11 points, six rebounds) and senior guard/captain COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/Saint Vincent Pallotti) (10 points, three steals) played well in support roles.
Also in double figures for Merrimack were sophomore guard ROLAND DAVIS (Deer Park, NY/St. Dominic's) (11 points) and sophomore forward AARON STROTHERS (Wareham, MA/Marianapolis Prep) (10 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots).
The Warriors, now 9-3 overall and 7-2 in the conference, bolted to a 52-38 halftime advantage. After Beinert brought the Hounds to a one-point deficit, 38-37, with 4:53 remaining, the Warriors outscored Assumption, 14-1, including a dunk by Mency at the buzzer.
The Greyhounds are next in action when they host conference rival Stonehill College Tuesday.
