Undefeated Adelphi stops Greyhound mens basketball, 79-65, in NE-10 action

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Junior guard RICHARD BYRD (Central Islip, NY/Copiague) scored 33 points with nine rebounds and three steals to lead undefeated Adelphi University past Assumption College, 79-65, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action SUNDAY at the Laska Gym.

Senior guard CASEY COSGROVE (Andover, MA/Andover) (17 points with five three-pointers) and junior guard DAVID AKINYOOYE (Elmont, NY/Elmont) (13 points, 12 rebounds, three blocked shots) played well in support roles for the Panthers, now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

Senior guard/captain COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/Saint Vincent Pallotti) scored 19 points and junior forward/captain MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) added a double-double 18 points, 10 rebounds.

Adelphi sped to a 34-20 lead with 5:49 left in the first half on a long three-pointer by Cosgrove. The Greyhounds would outscored the Panthers, 12-4 over the last five minutes to cut the gap to 38-32. A three-pointer by Baldarelli with 43 seconds left finished the streak.

Another three-pointer by Cosgrove made it 52-38 with 16:12 left in the game. The Greyhounds then ran a 16-2 spurt to make ait a two-point game, 52-54 with 9:33 left. Lefty sophomore guard KEVIN DONAHUE (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) finished the streak with a long three-pointer and a layin off a feed from sophomore forward TIM BEINERT (Floral Park, NY/Holy Cross).

The Greyhounds, now 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference are next in action hosting American International College in another NE-10 game WEDNESDAY at 7:30 p.m.
