Worcester State stops Greyhound ice hockey in overtime, 5-4, in ICFCU tournament

FITCHBURG, Mass. --- Sophomore center JOHN CAHALANE (Tewksbury, MA) scored his second goal of the season 2:35 into overtime as Worcester State College came-from-behind to defeat Assumption College, 5-4, to capture third-place in the ICFCU Hockey Shootout SATURDAY at the Wallace Civic Center.

Cahalane's game-winner was set up by senior forward TIM STALMOK (Paxton, MA/Saint John's) and junior defenseman SHAUN TRIBBETT (Austin, TX)

The Lancers trailed 4-2 as Greyhound junior left wing PATRICK FITZGIBBONS (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) scored his first goal of the season at 15:33 of the second period. Sophomore center TAYLOR LARSEN (Blackstone, MA/Worcester Academy) and sophomore right wing PAT O'KANE (Hollis, NH/Bishop Guertin) (games No. 3 star) assisted on the play.

The Lancers then scored the lone two goals of the third period within 1:32 to force the overtime. Sophomore center ANDREW BRADY (Oreland, PA) scored his second goal of the season with junior right wing BILLY O'NEILL (Strafford, PA) and sophomore left wing NICK ASTERITO (Philadelphia, PA) assisting at 12:22. Then at 13:54 senior forward MARK RINTEL (Oakland Gardens, NY) scored the equalizer as senior left wing LEE BELISLE (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee) and sophomore defenseman ANTHONY PAULSEN (Bakersfield, CA) assisted.

The Greyhounds moved to a 2-0 first-period lead as sophomore defenseman KEVIN GLANZMAN (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) scored his second goal from Fitzgibbons on the power play at 5:41. O'Kane then made it a two-goal advantage with assists from Fitzgibbons and Glanzman at 13:07.

The Lancers cut the gap in half as Brady, the game's No. 1 star, scored from O'Neill and Asterito at 10:05, the first of two power-play goals in the second period.

After the Greyhounds answered at 11:02 with O'Kane getting his third goal of the season from Larsen to again make it a two-goal edge, the Lancer's Asterito (No. 2 star) scored three seconds into a power-play opportunity from O'Neil and Brady to make it a one-goal game, 3-2.

Freshman goalkeeper ZACH HANSEN (Dexter, MI) made 21 saves to post the win in net for the Lancers. Senior JAMIE DI GIULIO (Peabody, MA/Tilton School) made 17 for the Greyhounds. Worcester State outshot the Greyhounds, 25-22.

The Greyhounds, now 0-3-0, are next in action WEDNESDAY at Northeast-10 Conference rival Stonehill College. That game is slated for a 7 p.m. faceoff at the Foxboro Sports Center. Worcester State is now 1-1-0.
