Meehan's overtime goal lifts Ice Dogs past Rhode Island, 4-3

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman left wing KEVEN MEEHAN (Melrose, MA/Austin Prep/Tilton School) scored 3:46 into overtime as Assumption College defeated the University of Rhode Island, 4-3, in men's non-conference ice hockey action Tuesday at the Buffone Rink.
After the Greyhounds had taken a 3-1 lead at 12:13 of the third dperiod as sophomore defenseman KEVIN GLANZMAN (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) scored his fourth of the season from freshman JAIME VONA (West Seneca, NY/Saint Francis).
Ram sophomore forward DAN LASSIK (Garnet Valley, PA) scored at 15:08 and then junior forward KYLE KRANNICH (Randolph, NJ) tied it at 3-3 at 17:45.
Meehan scored the game-winner, his seventh goal of the season, on a feed from senior forward JIM CAPULLI (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton/Williston-Northampton).
After a scoreless first period dominated by the goalkeepers, Greyhound senior JAMIE DI GIULIO (Peabody, MA/Tilton School) (17 saves) and Rams junior JOE SPAGNOLI (Cranston, RI) (10 saves) three power play goals were scored in the middle period. DiGiulio made 50 saves to post the win, while Spagnoli also had a busy evening with 42 saves in a shot-laden game. Assumption outshot Rhode Island 53-46.
Junior forward PATRICK FITZGIBBONS (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) scored two goals to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead before Ram sophomore forward DAN LASSIK (Garnet Valley, PA) scored just 13 seconds later to cut the deficit to one goal at the break.
Fitzgibbons' first goal, his eighth of the season at 3:53, came on the power play with assists to junior left wing ADAM GAUDREAU (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry/Tilton School) and DiGiulio, the first assist for a Greyhound goalie this year. At 18:03 Fitzgibbons scored his ninth of the season as sophomore forward PAT O'KANE (Hollis, NH/Bishop Guertin) and sophomore KEVIN GLANZMAN (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) assisted.
It took little time for Lassik to cut the gap to a single goal as forward KYLE LETOURNEAU (Warwick, RI) and forward JAY DUPRAS (Hingham, MA) assisted.
The Greyhounds are now 14-9-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference and conclude their regular-season at conference rival Southern New Hampshire Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Rhode Island is now 18-9 overall and moves to the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League playoffs at Newark, DE, Thursday through Saturday.
The Northeast-10 Conference playoffs begin on February 27 with the No. 3 and 4 seeds hosting Nos. 5 and 6. The Greyhounds, who have clinched the No. 2 seed, will host their first game on March 3 at the Buffone Rink. The championship game is slated for March 6 and will be webcast by the PackNetwork free of charge.
