O'Kane reaches 20, Ice Dogs defeat Stonehill, 6-1

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore forward PAT O'KANE (Hollis, NH/Bishop Guertin) scored two goals including his 20th of the season and sophomore NICK BLANCHETTE (Stuart, FL/Worcester Academy) made 43 saves as Assumption College defeated Stonehill College, 6-1, in Northeast-10 Conference hockey Saturday at the Buffone Rink.
Sharing the spotlight was freshman forward JAIME VONA (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) who also scored two goals.
The Greyhounds are now 9-8 overall and an impressive 6-1 in conference play. Stonehill is now 7-8-1 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The team is in first place in the standings by virtue of its winning the season series with Stonehill (2-0), Franklin Pierce (2-0) and Saint Michael's (1-0) . . . each series won gets two points in the standings.
The last Greyhound with 20 or more goals in a season was John Ilvonen who had 20 in 1999-00. Twenty-one players have reached the seasonal total since 1979-80. O'Kane, the Northeast-10 Conference leading scorer (20-11--31 points), is also the first player since Mike Cardillo (25 goals, 24 games) to average better than a goal-a-game since 1997-98.
The Greyhounds started quickly as junior forward PAT FITZGIBBONS (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) converted a feed from senior defenseman DEREK WHITNEY (Scituate, MA/Pomfret School) at 2:15. Vona made it 2-0 at 8:52 with junior defenseman MARC LABB (Longmeadow, MA/Longmedow) and freshman forward KEVEN MEEHAN (Melrose, MA/Austin Prep) assisting on the play.
The Greyhounds made it 5-0 with a three-goal barrage in the second period, two coming on the power-play, compliments of O'Kane, the conference leading power play scorer with eight goals on the man advantage.
O'Kane got his 19th on feeds from senior forward JOSH BOISSONEAU (Bedford, NH/Trinity) at 3:58 and his 20th on feeds from sophomore forward TAYLOR LARSEN (Blackstone, MA/Worcester Academy) (the conference top assister with 17) and junior defenseman MATT SCIOLI (North Reading, MA/North Reading). Vona scored his fifth goal from Fitzgibbons at 11:14.
Stonehill spoiled Blanchette's shutout bid as junior forward ANGELO TODESCA (Westwood, MA/Catholic Memorial) scored a shorthanded goal at 7:02 of the third period. Senior forward PETER ROUNDY (Simsbury, CT/Kimball Union) and junior defenseman ERIC SCHOLL (Wilmington, MA/Tilton School) assisted.
Freshman forward DAVE MAIOCCO (Medford, MA/Arlington Catholic) scored his second career goal ay 19:18 for the Hounds assisted by Boissoneau. The Greyhounds are next in action Tuesday at Salve Regina at the Portsmouth Abbey Rink. Faceoff is at 8:15 p.m.
