Ice Dogs outskate Franklin Pierce, 5-3, in Northeast-10 hockey

WINCHENDON, Mass. --- Freshman right wing CAM MAILLET (Leominster, MA/Worcester Academy) scored his first collegiate goal and made it a memorable one, a shorthanded game-winner as Assumption College defeated Franklin Pierce University, 5-3, in Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey action Saturday at the Winchendon School Arena.
Maillet's goal made it 4-3 at 12:36 of the third period as the Greyhounds improved to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Franklin Pierce is now 4-12-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the conference. Freshman forward KEVEN MEEHAN (Melrose, MA/Austin Prep) and sophomore defenseman KEVIN GLANZMAN (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) assisted on the goal.
Freshman right wing JAMIE VONA (West Seneca, NY/Saint Francis) made it 1-0 in the first period as Meehan and junior ADAM GAUDREAU (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) assisted at 19:08.
The teams each scored twice in the second period as the Greyhounds entered the final 20 minutes leading 3-2.
Franklin Pierce tied the game at 1-1 just 1:26 into the period as sophomore forward ANTHONY CHIGHISOLA (Whitman, MA/Williston Northampton) scored on a wrist shot from the left circle for his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Freshman forward ROSCOE SWEENEY (Falmouth, MA) and freshman forward MICHAEL CARR (South Boston, MA/New Hampton) assisted on the play.
The Greyhounds scored the next two goals to move to a 3-1 advantage.
Glanzman scored on a slap shot at 5:47 on the power play for his third goal of the season with Gaudreau assisting (his second of the game). At 14:04 sophomore right wing PAT O'KANE (Hollis, NH/Bishop Guertin), the leading scorer in the Northeast-10 Conference with 18-11--29 points, continued his quest for the first 20-goal season in over a decade as he notched his 18th of the season in a delayed-penalty situation. Sophomore center TAYLOR LARSEN (Blackstone, MA/Worcester Academy) and senior defenseman DEREK WHITNEY (Scituate, MA/Pomfret School) assisted. The last Greyhound with 20 or more goals in a season was John Ilvonen who had 20 in 1999-00. Twenty one players have reached the seasonal total since 1979-80. O'Kane is also the first player since Mike Cardillo (25 goals, 24 games) to average better than a goal-a-game since 1997-98.
The Ravens tightened the score as senior forward PHIL LA BRECK (Thornton, NH) got his seventh goal of the season with just five seconds left inthe period. Senior forward CASEY GOODELL (Rochester, NH) assisted.
After Maillet scored his shorthander to make it 4-2, the Ravens freshman defenseman BRENDAN MC CARRON (Andover, MA/Central Catholic) scored a long shot from the point through a screen to again make it a one-goal game. Sweeney was credited with an assist on the play.
Meehan scored an empty-netter with 14 seconds left to secure the victory for the Greyhounds. Meehan was the top point-producer for the Hounds with three points on a goal and two assists and his the leading freshman scorer in the conference with 5-10--15 points.
Sophomore goaltender NICK BLANCHETTE (Stuart, FL/Worcester Academy) stopped 25 shots to pick up the win (8-4) for the Greyhounds. Blanchette improved his save percentage to .913 (second in the conference) to go with his 2.97 goals-against average (second in the conference). Senior JON TUTTLE (Concord, NH/Concord) made 19 saves for Franklin Pierce. The Ravens outshot the Hounds, 28-24, however finished 0-for-9 on the power play.
The Hounds host SUNY-Brockport Wednesday at the Buffone Rink at 6:35 p.m., while Franklin Pierce is next in action Tuesday, when it travels to Southern New Hampshire for a Northeast-10 Conference contest at 7:30 p.m. at The Ice Den in Hooksett, N.H.
