Fitchburg State rallies to stop Ice Dogs with third-period explosion

FITCHBURG, Mass. --- Fitchburg State College scored four unanswered goals in the third period en route to a come-from-behind 5-3 win over Assumption College in the first round of the IC Credit Union Shootout FRIDAY night at the Wallace Civic Center.

The Greyhounds (0-2) will now face crosstown rival Worcester State College (0-1) in the third-place game SATURDAY at 1 p.m. at the Wallace Civic Center. Fitchburg State (2-0) will play Wentworth Institute (1-0), a 9-4 winner over Worcester State, in the championship game at 4 p.m.

Fitchburg State received a solid effort from sophomore forward THOMAS MC ALEER (East Islip, NY) and sophomore KEVIN MC CREADY (Poughkeepsie, NY) who combined for five points on four goals and one assist. Both scored two goals in the decisive third-period comeback.

Sophomore forward PAT O'KANE (Hollis, NH/Williston Northampton) led the Greyhounds with a goal and an assist.

The Falcons opened the scoring midway through the first period as freshman forward JOHN VETS (Hamden, CT/) scored his second goal of the season with assists credited to McAleer and freshman forward CHRIS COSTIGAN (Salem, NH).

The Falcons lead was shortlived as the Greyhounds dominated the middle period with a three-goal barrage to take a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore forward KEVIN GLANZMAN (Massapequa, NY) started the rally with his first goal of the season at the 5:08 mark on a feed from O'Kane. Just 29 seconds later junior left wing ADAM GAUDREAU (Londonderry, NH/Tilton School) put the Hounds in front with his first goal of the season. Sophomore right wing DENNIS SILVIO (Beverly, MA/Proctor Academy) and freshman left wing KEVEN MEEHAN (Melrose, MA/Tilton School) assisted on the play.

Less than two minutes later (7:35) O'Kane finished the uprising with his first goal of the season as junior defenseman MARC LABB (Longmeadow, MA/Vermont Academy) and senior defenseman DEREK WHITNEY (Scituate, MA/Pomfret Academy) assisted.

In the third period, Fitchburg State stormed back, scoring four consecutive goals to clinch its championship round berth.

McCready got the Falcons rolling just five minutes into the period with a power play goal with Costigan and freshman forward TREVOR LAWLER (Fitchburg, MA) credited with assists. McAleer then tied the game at 3-3 at 10:22 on a feed from Costigan.

Just 25 seconds later the Falcons scored the game-winner as McCready slipped the puck into the upper corner on a feed from sophomore forward TUCKER CALLEN (Annadale, NJ).

Fitchburg State sealed the victory at 17:33 as McAleer added an insurance goal---his second goal of the period from junior defenseman BILLY PESCOSOLIDO (Framingham, MA).

The Falcons dominated the offensive statistics with a 42-21 advantage in shots and converting two-of-eight power-play attempts. Sophomore goalkeeper BOBBY LEISER (Monroe, NY) had 18 saves in his first start of the season, while sophomore STEVE DI DOMENICO (Lowell, MA/Tilton School) stopped an amazing 37 shots for the Hounds.
