August 12, 2009

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Leo Fahey of Hudson, MA, the head women's volleyball coach at crosstown rival WPI the past two seasons, has been named the women's volleyball coach at Assumption College.

Melia replaces Gary Patch, who resigned after two years with the Greyhounds' program. The announcements were made by Ted Paulauskas, Director of Athletics.

Under his leadership, WPI posted a 21-34 record while his teams were honored both years by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence. In 2007, his team posted a 3.55 GPA, best among all WPI athletics programs.

He will continue to serve as the head men's club volleyball coach at WPI. And, he has served four years as a founder, director and coach of the Central Massachusetts Juniors Volleyball club, featuring players aged 12-18 and produced numerous eventual college volleyball players.

He also coached the Coast Volleyball and Sharks Volleyball clubs and the Hudson, MA High School program. He led that team to undefeated Mid Wach B titles for the first time in 2001 and 2002 reaching the Central Massachusetts Division II quarterfinals in both seasons.

Fahey was graduated from Assumption College in 1986 with a bachelors in political science. He played football, basketball, and track scholastically at Hudson High School and now works in the insurance industry.

The Greyhounds, a charter member of the N.C.A.A. Division II Northeast-10 Conference, open their 2009 season at Merrimack College in a non-conference match Tuesday, September 1 at 7 p.m. They open their home season in the newly refurbished Laska Gym Saturday, September 5 hosting both Franklin Pierce and Stonehill.
