Frank Flynn powers Greyhounds past A.I.C., 7-6

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore designated hitter FRANK FLYNN (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) hammered a three-run home run in the seventh inning to lead Assumption College past American International College, 7-6, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Thursday at Rocheleau Field.
Flynn was a major player as the Greyhounds swept A.I.C. in the two-game set this week. He pitched seven scoreless innings in his team?��s 6-2 win Wednesday.
The Hounds are now 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference, tied for first place in the standings with Bentley University, a 5-4 winner in 10 innings against Saint Anselm. American International is now 2-7 and 0-2.
The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as senior centerfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) had a sacrifice fly and a second run scored on an error.
The teams traded runs in the fourth inning as junior designated hitter NICK DEVINE (Springfield, MA/Cathedral) singled across a run for the Yellow Jackets and junior shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) singled in the Greyhounds run.
In the fifth inning the Jackets converted an RBI double by junior second baseman PAUL MAZA (Valencia, Venezuela/Thomas Edison) and an RBI single by senior leftfielder DAN BASSANI (Naples FL/Naples) to tie the game at 3-3. They scored two more runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single by sophomore centerfielder GREG CARUSO (Bronx, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) and an error and another on a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman DAN MOONEY (Bennington, VT/LaSalle Institute) in the seventh to take a three-run advantage.
Migrants led the bottom of the seventh with a double and moved to third base on a single by junior rightfielder MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John?��s). A wild pitch scored the first run before senior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) singled setting the stage for Flynn?��s homer to rightfield.
The Hounds got solid work from their bullpen as junior righthander DAN EVANGELISTA (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep) and freshman righthander MATT METCALF (Warwick, RI/Hendricken) combined for one-hit shutout relief over the final three innings. Metcalf got his second save with three strikeouts including the final two outs with the tying run in scoring position.
Foley finished with three singles to pace the Hounds 12-hit attack, while freshman second baseman SHANE KEDDY (Worcester, MA/Worcester Tech) finished with two singles. Bassani had three hits to lead the Jackets 13-hit offensive, while Caruso, Devine and sophomore first baseman JULIAN CONCEPCION (Woodstock, CT/St. Peter-Marian) had two each.
The Greyhounds are next in action Saturday when they travel to conference rival Merrimack College in a doubleheader at 12 noon.
