Worcester State defeats Greyhounds ice hockey, 8-5, despite Gaudreau, Fitzgibbons two goals

AUBURN, Mass. --- Freshman forward NICK ASTERITO (Philadelphia, PA) recorded his first career hat-trick and he also scored the eventual game-winner with 7:46 left in the third period as Worcester State defeated Assumption College, 8-5, THURSDAY in the Horgan Rink.

The Greyhounds, now 6-15-4, took a 3-0 lead in the first period as junior forward ADAM GAUDREAU (Londonderry, NH/Tilton) led the way with a pair of goals.

Gaudreau opened the scoring at 5:43 with junior defenseman JON RETELLE (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth) and freshman forward DENNIS SILVIO (Beverly, MA/Proctor Academy) assisting.

Sophomore forward PATRICK FITZGIBBONS (Holliston, MA/Saint John's) made it 2-0 with his seventh goal of the season at 9:24 as freshmen forwards PAT O'KANE (Hollis, NH/Williston Northampton) and TAYLOR LARSEN (Blackstone, MA/Worcester Academy) assisted. Gaudreau capped off the run at 12:04 on the power play with Larsen and freshman defenseman KEVIN GLANZMAN (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) assisting on his seventh goal of the season.

Asterito then got the Lancers (6-13-3 overall) back in the game as he scored a pair of power play goals, his fifth and sixth of the season, to finish the period.

Worcester State tied the score 3-3 at 2:18 of the second period on a goal by junior forward MARK RINTEL (Queens, NY), his 11th goal of the season, on an assist by junior forward TIM STALMOK (Paxton, MA/Saint John's).

Sophomore defenseman MARC LABB (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) put the Greyhounds back in front at 5:16 on the power play with his fifth of the season with senior defenseman CHRIS GENOVESE (Woburn, MA/Governor's Academy) assisting. Worcester State however got goals from junior forward LEE BELISLE (Chicopee, MA) and freshman forward JOHN CAHALANE (Tewksbury, MA) to lead 5-4 after two periods.

Fitzgibbons scored his second goal of the game and eighth of the season from Glanzman and O'Kane 41 seconds into the final period as the Greyhounds again drew even at 5-5.

Worcester State however got a power-play goal from Asterito, a shorthanded tally from Rintel and an insurance score from freshman CODY WARILA (Shirley, MA) to close out the game.

Junior goalie BRIAN ROBINSON (Groveland, MA/Pentucket) made 26 saves for the Lancers, while senior D.J. PINKHAM (Malden, MA/Arlington Catholic) (40 minutes, 11 saves) and junior JAMIE DI GIULIO (Peabody, MA/Tilton) (20 minutes, 7 saves) worked in the net for the Greyhounds.

Worcester State is at Plymouth State SATURDAY at 6 p.m., while the Greyhounds host Curry Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday is Senior Night for the Greyhounds as they salute seniors Genovese, Pinkham and forward FRANK BOVA (Princeton, MA/Wachusett).

The Northeast-10 Conference playoffs are scheduled to begin Saturday, February 28. The Greyhounds could host a first-round opponent that night depending on the results of other conference games this coming week.
