Franklin Pierce stops Greyhound baseball in Northeast-10 Conference final; word Monday on NCAA berth!

RINDGE, NH --- Postgraduate lefthander STEVE CADORET (Sterling, MA/Wachusett) with relief help from ROB NICHOLAS (Northboro, MA/Algonquin) combined on a six-hitter as top-seeded Franklin Pierce University stopped second-seeded Assumption College, 6-1, in the championship final of the Northeast-10 Conference tournament here SUNDAY at Pappas Field.

The Ravens forced the final game by virtue of an improbable 25-6 win in the first game.

Both Franklin Pierce and Assumption should receive word Monday on their selection to the upcoming N.C.A.A. Division II regional tournament scheduled for this coming weekend.

Senior shortstop MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) opened the scoring for the Greyhounds with his 11th home run of the season over the fence in left centerfield.

The Raven got back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning by first baseman STEVE CARR (Nahant, MA/St. Mary's) and freshman third baseman BEN BENIGNO (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) to pace a 12-hit attack.

In the opener the Ravens scored eight runs in the second inning and added 11 more in the third inning en route to the win.

Sophomore designated hitter DEREK INGUI (Sterling, MA/Wachuett) had five hits and five RBI to pace a 23-hit attack, while postgraduate outfielder CHRIS HICKS (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) added six RBI with two home runs. Franklin Pierce hit five home runs in the game.

The Greyhounds had two home runs in the first game as senior third baseman MIKE DI REDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) hit his ninth of the season and sophomore outfielder JOSH DUFRESNE (Auburn, MA/Auburn) hit his first collegiate home run. DiReda, Dufresne and junior outfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) all had two hits, while senior outfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) led the 14-hit attack with two singles and a double.

DiReda and junior pitcher TIM DUPUIS (Suffield, CT/Suffield High) were both named to the Northeast-10 Conference all-tournament team.
