September 9, 2008

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College scored three first-half goals and got a shutout effort from a pair of goalkeepers en route to a convincing 4-0 Northeast-10 Conference win over Pace University TUESDAY night at the Multi-Sport Stadium

The Greyhounds evened their overall record at 2-2 and 1-1 in the conference, while Pace fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Sophomore goalkeeper LAUREN KEATING (Nashua, NH/Nashua North), who shutout Georgian Court in the opener (1-0) made two saves in 72:20, before junior KATELYN DOLAN (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow) finished up. Pace junior goalkeeper BREANNA GAULT (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) ended with seven saves. Keating lowered her goals-against average to an impressive 0.72 for 372 minutes.

The Greyhounds' first goal was a rarity as sophomore midfielder SASHA SARMENTO (Somerset, MA/Somerset) scored her first career goal on her own corner kick that just arced its way into the far corner during a torrential downpour just 9:15 into the game.

Sophomore forward TINA GILLEN (East Bridgewater, MA/Carver) made it 2-0 just three minutes later as junior midfielder KELLEY DEWALT (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) sent her in one-on-one on Gault. Gillen beat the Setters goalie to the right corner for her first goal of the season.

The Greyhounds would take a 3-0 advantage as freshman defender CATHERINE PANGIARELLA (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow) collected a rebound in a flurry in front of the net and poked it in the upper left corner for her first collegiate goal at 18:31.

Another freshman, forward JAMI STYRCZULA (Bradford, MA/Haverhill) scored her second goal of the season on the second assist of the game for DeWalt. Styrczula collected a crossing pass from the right wing and redirected the ball into the far corner.

The Greyhounds outshot the Setters, 21-3, their best total so far this season and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Assumption is next in action Saturday at conference rival Stonehill College at 1 p.m., while Pace hosts Saint Michael's at 11 a.m.
