Bethany Plasski leads Greyhound women past New Haven, 65-61, in Northeast-10 Conference action

WEST HAVEN, CT --- Senior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) scored a team-high 18 points and made key free throws down-the-stretch as Assumption College defeated the University of New Haven, 65 61, in Northeast-10 Conference wome's basketball WEDNESDAY night at the Chargers Gym.
Plasski hit a three-pointer in the waning moments of the first half to draw the Greyhounds to within two-points (29-27) at the break. Junior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) (12 points, 12 rebounds) was superb for the Greyhounds with 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in the half. The Greyhounds held a large 26-16 advantage on the boards however were doomed by 11 turnovers.
Senior guard BRIANA RENDE (Augusta, ME/Cony) opened the second half for New Haven with a long-range three-pointer before sophomore forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) (10 points, 9 rebounds) and junior guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock Academy) (12 points, 7 rebounds) hit jumpers for the Greyhounds to make it 32-31.
After Rende connected again for New Haven on a conventional three-point play to make it 35-31 New Haven, the Greyhounds went on a 17-0 spurt.
Lupien started with a short jumper off-the-glass on a feed from senior point/captain TRISH GARDNER (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) and Griffiths tied the game, 35-35, with a lane jumper with 16:22 left.
Junior guard MAEGAN COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) then made layup off an offensive rebound, Plasski scored on an inside move and hit a jumper before Cook again scored inside and converted a free throw for a 44-35 advantage. A layin by Gardner on the fastbreak and a jumper by Griffiths on a feed from Plasski completed the run with the Hounds leading 48-35.
With the Greyhounds leading 60-50 after a pair of Griffith free throws the Chargers made a run to get back into the game. Junior forward AYSIA SAUNDERS (Bronx, NY/Aquinas) made a layup, Sophomore guard YASMIN ITHIER-VICENTY (Newington, CT/Newington) hit a jumper in the lane, sophomore guard DOMINIQUE STELLMACHER (New Britain, CT/New Britain) and Ithier-Vicenty each made two free throws to make it a two point game, 60-58.
Plasski then made two free throws for the Greyhounds before Rende countered with a three-pointer for the Chargers to cut the gapa to one-point, 62-61, with 30 seconds left. Plasski finished the scoring making three-of-four free throws in the final 27 seconds to account for the final four-point margin.
Senior forward LAUREN HOOD (Ashland, MA/Ashland) led New Haven with 18 points including 14-of-16 from the free throw line, while Rende (13 points) and Ithier-Vicenty (11 points) also reached double figures.
Assumption is now 9-6 overall and 7-4 in the conference, while New Haven is now 10-6 overall and 5-6 in the conference.
The Greyhounds host Southern New Hampshire University SATURDAY at the Laska Gym in another Northeast-10 Conference game at 1:30 p.m.
